James Blunt's Royalties Frozen

Category: General music news Posted: 20.3.2006
According Gigwise.com:

James Blunt has had his royalties suspended on six songs over his dispute with a producer who claims he moulded his hit debut album.

The UK Performing Rights Society (PRS) has frozen the royalty payments on the Back To Bedlam tracks following accusations from Lukas Burton that he was cut out of Blunt's success after initially helping the singer.

Burton claims he was jettisoned by Blunt when he got new management, despite the fact he first spotted his potential and flew the former soldier out to Los Angeles so they could work together on tracks which eventually formed his debut album.

Writing on the internet Burton says Blunt?s early work was, "crude, occasionally laughably direct, and betrayed his relative lack of musicianship or discernible influence."

However, Burton says, although he subsequently helped the singer shape his songs, he was betrayed after failing to make Blunt sign a contract covering their work.

He adds, "I had breathed life into (the project) and couldn't believe that the universe was going to repay me with such abject treachery."

"James is exactly as successful as I knew he would be, not that it does me, my bank balance or my family much good to say it."

Blunt's publicist has dismissed the claims, commenting, Traditionally, when a record is this massive, everyone wants to claim credit for its success."
