Metal Edge magazine recently conducted an interview with Sepultura guitarist Andreas Kisser.
Metal Edge: Do you still keep in contact with Max Cavalera, former Sepultura frontman, now in Soulfly?
Andreas: "No. Since he left the band, we never really talk. I hear crazy stories that he doesn't sign Sepultura stuff. And he doesn't talk about Sepultura. It's really stupid. You cannot really kill a past like that just because he wants to, or because of his wife former Sepultura and current Soulfly manager Gloria Cavalera, you know? We never played together all throughout these years. Only one festival in Germany we were together, but at a different date. But we never really had a chance to talk again."
Metal Edge: Do you hear similarities between SOULFLY and SEPULTURA?
Andreas: Yeah. I think so. I think Max tries too hard to reproduce 'Roots', you know. Something that's not there anymore. It happened once. It was a great experience for everybody involved? All the guests that we had from Brazil, and KORN, Ross Robinson (producer)? a great team that was working for us, a really cool experience. But to reproduce that again, I think, is so foolish. The first Soulfly album, the only thing different from 'Roots' was the drummer, the bass player and the guitar player. (Laughs) Everything else is the same. Like the whole structure? We took years to build that structure, and they took them all. I think from our perspective, we always wanted to look forward. That's why we went to Japan? trying new stuff, and you know, the risk is always there, but that's what it's all about. If you don't have that kind of excitement, that uncertainty, you'll never grow. If everything is certain, you'll get bored. You'll become a vegetable. You have to have certain doubts and stuff that moves you. That's why we always try different stuff. The book, The Divine Comedy which served as the basis for Sepultura's latest album, Dante XXI, was something very new for us. We grow a lot more when we do that."
