Review Vox AD30VT

Review by whiteHendrix on 20.7.2006

I bought this amp at a local Guitar Center for $239.99 plus tax. I originally went in to buy a used Fender Delux Reverb II, but since that was sold I checked out this low priced Vox amp. I plugged a Gibson SG into it and just started to wail out on it, the tone was very impressive and the power (30 watts) was dynamite. The fact that it was tube driven was a real eye catcher for me.

  Features

The Vox AD30VT is a modelling amp, and if younullre not familiar with that term, it means the amp emulates other amps and effects processors. It has 11 amp models and 11 effects, which are pretty great sounding. The amp also has a 2 channel preset saving mode, which means you take your two favorite tones, and save em up for future use without readjusting all the knobs. It even has a noise reduction feature, but takes a little time getting the feel for the right spots. Its tube and solid state so its a hybrid, which is useful. You have the digital technology with the analog warmth and faithfulness. The tones range from clean and sparkly rockabilly to full distorted metal. Effects range from basic reverb to compression, and even auto-wah, which all can be intricately adjusted to your taste. There is also a wattage adjuster so if you donnullt want to plug headphones into the rear jack, you can minimize the sound without crapping out your tone. If your musical taste seems a bit schitzopherenic like mine, go for this amp.

  Playability

This amp is highly versatile with tone and durability. Like I stated above, you can practically play any style of music. Infact, owners of the Vox Valvetronix amp created a website to submit amp settings they find and like, and you can hear sound samples, the site is http://valvetronix.net/valvetronix/DA15/AD15-30-50-100/model_1_date_1.html.

  Quality

The entire amp from tube to speaker is hard as a U.S. Marine. Wonnullt crack under intense usage, and can take anything you throw at it (except water). When I bought mine, I received a free 2 year extended warranty, which is really cool when the time comes for a tube change, but that will probably be the only reason to use the warranty. If this were stolen, I would buy another one after I was released from prison for bashing in the thiefnulls head.

  Durability

There have been reviews on other websites about this ampnulls imput jack coming loose and falling into the cabinet, but Inullve yet to see this problem. The chrome grille in front of the speaker seems as durable as a Peterbiltnulls front end, so theres no risk of punching out a speaker, unless you shoot it with a .44 magnum, but younullre not Elvis so donnullt do it. I donnullt gig but Inullve maxed it before and it really handles itself. The cabinet is made of sturdy wood with steel capped corners, and the outside is layered with what seems to be a cross breed of tolex and rubber, which is tough as Rhino spray-on truck bedliners.

  Overall

Best amp I ever played with, and Inullve toyed with multiple high end models (Bassman, HD head and cabs, Marshall). I would highly reccomend this to rookie and pro alike. I was so happy to get this home after I paid it off. The wait was unbearable but when the time came, oooo weee!!!. If younullre even the slightest bit of interested, check out the website I listed above and listen to some of the audio samples (my favorite is the one labelled "Like Chris Isaak". Email me at "Gretschdude86@yahoo.com" with any questions about this amp and I will be more than happy to answer.
