Review Tokai Les Paul

Review by a visitor on 10.2.2004

This review is for a Tokai Les Paul (Korean) purchased at Academy of Sound Norwich UK. I paid £399 in Dec 2004.

  Features

I love the look and the sound of the Les Paul but never have the cash to aquire the real thing so when I saw this one I thought for £399 I must give it a try. The honeyburst finish looked really good although not book-matched and the feel of the guitar generally was good, neck profile spot-on (aparently taken from a genuine 59)not that i`ve played a 59, anyway, so far so good. All the electrics functioned smoothly and efficiently. For a middle aged man who has been playing guitar for 30 years I was getting rather exited.

  Playability

While useing the Les Paul over the short period of ownership it did produce a nice sound. Warm and jazzy on the neck pick-up and rocky and sharp but not stratty (with a little help from overdrive) on the tail pick-up.

  Quality

There was no unwanted noise from the electrics and compared to the epiphone Les Paul I would say the Tokai looked and felt more authentic. Soundwise I am sure it must be superior to some degree as lots of people rave over Tokai pick-ups and as I didn`t use the Epi` in a session with the band I cannot make a full comparison.

  Durability

Reliability I cannot say as I did not have the guitar for too long, as you will read later but, I would guess from the overall quality of the guitar it would, I`m sure, last the course. I did use the guitar at one band rehersal and it held tune fine throughout a two hour session.

  Overall

During my ownership of the guitar I started to notice a few shortcomings. Fistly the nut was a horror, badly cut (Ive noticed another bad nut on a Tokai Vee), 21st and 22nd frets proud causing severe choking off and worst of all the neck seating was slightly low on the E,A, side when viewed from the body. This last observasion really made me fall out of love with the guitar and the shop was very accomodating in letting me change it for a Japanese Tokai Strat (Much better built guitar from top to bottom). My advise to anyone looking for a Les Paul is, if you connot afford the real thing find £399+£200 for the Japanese version.
