Review Squier M-50

Review by cicatriz on 20.6.2004

The Squier M-50 comes from the Series 24 collection by Squier, in which was remakes of classic guitars, with small modifications on the design to make each have a different look than the original guitars such as Les Pauls and SGs. I purchased this guitar through Musiciannulls Friend for $180. Musiciannulls Friend was good with how long it took for it to arrive, I continue to use them for most of my guitar purchases and reference on prices.

  Features

The guitar has a layout much like a real Gibson Les Paul. The body has a rounded curve instead of of sharp pointed curve on the the end of the body by the neck. In addition neck is a bolt on like other squiers, which differs from a Les Pauls glued on neck. 2 humbucker pick ups, one at the neck the other at the bridge. Adjusto-Matic Bridge with Anchored-Tailpiece give the guitar a nice look that compliments the body well. Nato bolt on c shape neck with 22 frets on a rosewood fingerboard with a polyurethane finish. 3 way toggle switch with neck pickup, neck and bridge, and bridge pick up postions. Volume and tone knobs for each pickup The guitar in general is a decent starter guitar or even a decent second guitar. The guitar has a good treble and medium sound when put into a amp it handles well in both clean and distorted sounds. Sadly, there are some drawbacks. The high E string tends to get caught on the neck pick up at times, which is not good if younullre looking to use this for shows. This can be countered by adjusting the height of that pick up. The toggle switch is spring loaded so it doesnnullt stay on one of the postions for the pick ups, itnullll just be neck and bridge for the majority unless you find a way to get the switch to stick on the postion by using the cap on the switch as I have done. The pick ups get sensetive in some cases and the bridge pick up will no pick anything up, this might just be on my guitar, but I have countered it by lowering the pickup all the way down so that when Inullm picking at the bridge I do not hit the pick up, and I donnullt lose any sound. So again, the guitar is a decent starter, but if you know how to tweek it right, it could become a guitar younullll use beyond a starternulls ability.

  Playability

Compared to a Squier Affinity and a Ibanez GAX, it does the job. With the toggle being at the top instead of down by the volume knobs, swithcing tones is a alot easier and you donnullt have to sacrafice time playing to get a better sound.

  Quality

Again, compared to a Squier Affinity, it generates a lot less noise, and the more you tweek it, the more younullll understand of how the guitar reacts and what generates the noise, but regardless, there is a less noise on this guitar than any other I have played, aside from a real Les Paul. Handles well with both clean and distortion. Has great treble and middle sounds.

  Durability

The guitar set to the factory settings is not good steady and reliable. Younullll have to tweek it to your likings and to what you want and to how itnullll work. The height of the pick ups is a big issue on this one, but you can adjust them, which works out well if younullre playing the higher strings so that they donnullt get caught on the humbuckers. It still plays excellent after having it for a little more than 2 years.

  Overall

Overall, I am satisfied with it. I mainly chose this guitar for itnulls look and itnulls price at first, it had a nice classic look to it with a price I could afford. At first I was a little disapointed when I first started playing it, but then I tweeked it to my satisfaction with the pick up heights and the toggle switch.
So it was eye candy for me in the beginning, but now itnulls more than that, itnulls my axe, at least for now, and itnulls holding up well, the only thing that could replace it for me would be a jagstang, but thats out of my price range right now, so this will do just well.
