Review Pork Pie Lil' Squealer Snare 5x12

Review by a visitor on Nov 26, 2006

I recently bought my lil'squealer from the manhattan guitar center. the low cost ($179) was almost unbelievable for any pork pie. so i naturally had my doubts about the quality. The drum sounded so good in the store, i decided to take it home and give it a shot. I'd been playing with a 12X5 yamaha stage custom as my regular snare, so i had a personal reference point.

  Features

the goods:
-looks damn cool.
-tunes easily, with smooth increase of tension and clear overtones at the lugs.
-sounds GREAT. thick splat with a dense crack with enough high end to make you blink. And, a wide dynamic range, for gentle taps to hard hittin rock. it sounds much bigger than it is.
-feels great. when a drum sounds like this, it just feels better.

the bads: THE POWDERCOATED LUGS ARE REALLY REALLY BAD!!!!!

-so far the only real negative to this drum that i've found is the hardware. specifically the powdercoated tuning lugs. (i know they look really nice but...) The coating on the thread is so slick that within minutes of playing a song, the drum would be WAY out of tune. by the second song in a set, the lugs and head were completely loose. this is not so cool.
my solution, which seems to be working, was to replace the lugs with regular chrome lugs; and the threads and tune are holding pretty well.

  Playability

definitely VERY playable. this drum sounds sweet, comprable to other snares that cost 2wice as much.

  Quality

sound quality is awesome.

  Durability

as long as you are not using the powdercoated lugs, the drum holds its tuning average to well

  Overall

VERY VERY GOOD.
