A strange idea by Weller seems to have paid off as this album has given a whole new meaning to the term "acoustic". The old Weller style still remains but his transformation from The Jam to Style Council finally to solo has altered his approach to song structures. The lyrics are less pro-revolutionary and more coming to realise that society is now less penetratable even if the lyrics are still meaningful. The tunes and rhythms are not as upbeat as his Jam era but still give an air of mysticism and a haunting feel to the occasion. It cannot be underestimated the superiority of Weller's genius either by pen and paper or on his old 6 string. The individual songs are not dynamic in instrumental sound, (how could they be as its played on the same instrument) but the diversity comes from within the tune... the chord structure, the lyrical content, the rhythem and the ability of Weller to add special and memorable riffs that will intise novice guitarist to pick it up and give it a go.
