Review Heritage Custom H535

Review by a visitor on 17.10.2005

Bought at Middletown Music, Middletown DE. Bought it October 11,2005. Bought it for $1700.00.

  Features

The same day I played a brand new Gibson 335, selling for $800.00 more than the Heritage, and the Gibson was piece of junk next to the Heritage. I had played the 335 first and was so disappointed that I thought I wouldnnullt even want a semi-hollowbody guitar. After playing the Heritage H535, I cannullt imagine playing anything else. It is an absolutley flawless instrument, and I am not exaggerating. The ergonomics of the instrument, the finish, the neck, the tone produced by the stock pickups, etc., all of it was perfect.

  Playability

Again, compared to the $2500.00 Gibson 335, this instrument plays 1000% better. The neck is slightly chunky, but it feels very natural. The Gibson by contrast, felt like someone had cut a baseball bat in two and called it a neck.

  Quality

No problems with the quality of this instrument. I have only owned it for one week, so I cannot talk about durability, but right now everything feels well made. Time will tell ...

  Durability

Unless I drop it, of course.

  Overall

Having played Gibsons, Epiphones, and Gretschs that day, I felt that I made an informed decision. And I got the best guitar out of the bunch without spending the most money. Thatnulls the definition of a bargain, isnnullt it? If I had any gripes at all, it would be in lack of information on this instrument. Nothing from the store other than the warranty card, and nothing from the company. When I emailed Heritage asking for information about this guitar, the best they could do was tell me from the serial number that it was made in 2004. Nothing else. It would be nice to have some specifics about this instrument for when I pass it on to one of my kids in 25 years.

If you donnullt know about Heritage, they are the ORIGINAL Gibson factory people who stayed behind when Gibson moved to Nashville. Same instrument styles, same factory same "old" quality at much less bucks. Compared to the new Gibsons, these are simply better. Period.
This instrument was bought with Jay Wolfe in Jupiter FL last summer for $1400 with case.

  Features

It is same as Gibson dot 335, but a bit thinner body. Mahogany neck and an absolutely incredible Burnt Amber finish with antique binding that is just sexy as hell. No binding on headstock but who cares? Chrome metal with amber buttons on controls.
3-way switch and double tone/volume controls. Work fine but volume controls not that continuous. Schaller tuners keep the axe in tune.

  Playability

Alnico humbuckers good enough for me as I play an eclectic mix of early rock, blues and folk. I donnullt like the sound of the upscale HRW or Seymour Duncans as they seem to be for people who really crank up the effects and need the extra punch they offer. Regular ones give smoother sound. A matter of taste. They are quite ajustable anyway.
Neck is butter. I changed the strings (why do all companies offer such crappy stock strings?) for DnullAddario chromes and lowered the action... very easy with the Gibson bridge for fine tuning and you can play all day without shredding fingers. Neck wide enough to let you play finger style although you have to watch out for the bridge pickup! If you like a bit more room to work with, this is a guitar for you... neck is similar to Gibson.

  Quality

This is NOT a pedal to the metal/shreddernulls axe! The body gives warmth to tone and sustain is on and on and on. You donnullt need to go heavy on the effects to make up for what is lacking in the instrument. Once set up, minimal noise from strings or frets. I never really cranked it up but given the setup and quality I doubt there would be problems.

  Durability

I play a lot at home and have taken it out a few times to play but as I donnullt gig cannot say for durability. This is a solid instrument, and as all these models a bit heavy but very well balanced . I will give it a good rating but this is due to lack of info!

  Overall

I have tried a couple of Gibsons before settling on this model...originally loved the Les Paul but the hollow body double cut 335/535 style fits me better. Researched it over internet before going down to Florida (on vacation anyway. This was bonus) to choose it. I was going to get the more expensive (555) model but when I tried this guitar- love at first sight! It is a guitar for life.
PS Itnulls Better Than A Gibson
