Review Hartke Kickback 12

Review by a visitor on 2.8.2006

Bought this big little amp just when Samson had aqired Hartke, and the price dropped considerably. With a nice deal at my store, I got it for around 2400 swedish crowns (350 us, or so...). As far as I can tell, the samson-takeover hasn?t compromised the quality of this product. Their method for dropping the price, was to moove production to china. (wich I have other opinions about... but they cut the price, without compromising quality.)

  Features

The controls may be a bit too basic, but they do the job. The "conture" button works magic on any bass I ever plugged in. But the real kicker, is the kickback! (hehe...) The bass-reflection on the backside, makes the amp sound MUCH bigger, when in the angled position. I have used the kickback as my only amplification when playing for hundreds of people, and I had no problem cutting through.

  Playability

Well... It?s a budget amp. But the bang for the buck is incredible. I?d say, it?s close to Excellent, though.

  Quality

I always liked the "hartke-sound" and that?s what I get! It?s a matter of taste, but in my book, It?s Excellent!

  Durability

Well... good I guess... I bought it almost two Years ago, and not a single hickup yet. I havent been abusive with it, but not very careful either. Another year or two without problems, and I would say Excellent!

I won?t elaborate on that. It?s a great (maybe the best) amp in it?s class. It sounds WAY bigger than its 120 watts, and it does the job every time!

If You?re looking for a practice/club - amp, and if You like the hartke sound... get one!

Purchased from Uhlik Music of Wichita, KS. There was a trade involved, but I probably ended up paying about $430 for it in real money.

What made me buy it was the SOUND, pure and simple. The portability and the simplicity of the controls made me like it even more, but it was the sound that hooked me.

  Features

This is a simple, elegantly designed workhorse amp for gigging musicians. It has everything it needs, and nothing it doesnnullt need.

Dead simple tone controls - A "Shape" knob which controls a movable notch filter, and Bass, Mid, and Treble controls. I had my sound in about 8 seconds.

The design of the cabinet creates a very big presence around the amp, even at low volumes. You can hear almost as well from beside or in back of the amp as you can from in front of it. This helps everyone stay in the pocket.

The 12" aluminum speaker was what surprised me the most. It has smooth, endless lows, reminiscent of a 60s B-15 with a JBL D-140. But the mids and highs are crystal clear, like a good studio monitor. All this without horns or tweeters. Inulld seen a lot of people using these speakers, and now I know why!

  Playability

Plug and play! There are other amps that might sound as good, but they weigh more and cost more. Thatnulls what makes this one shine.

  Quality

I love it, especially the presence I mentioned earlier. I do a lot of theater gigs where Inullm playing with acoustic musicians - piano, string sections, etc.. Many have commented on how natural and "non-electric" my sound is. Very warm and hi-fi.

And it can rock out when you need to, as well.

  Durability

It seems to be built for the long haul, and there doesnnullt seem to be any pattern showing up in reviews regarding breakdowns or failures.

I wish I had bought one of these a long time ago!

Played on it at church on a weekly basis, and I loved it, so I saved up and bought it. Its the best bass amp Inullve ever played, got it from American Musical Supply, and paid $400 for it

  Features

Has Master volume, Bass, Mid, and Treble, Has the Shape feature(can make it sound like anything from the vintage Richenbacker sound to a fat creamy tone), has a Line out, and a Board out feature. Aluminum cone speaker for sharper, crisper sound.

  Playability

Its the best amp Inullve played. Its sharp and crisp, can have great, clear highs, and deep thunderous lows, and still sound clear. no annoying feedback like some. It gets that old Ricken backer sound, and can get a warm fat tone too, great sounds from it.

  Quality

Like I said before, its the best Inullve ever played, Inullm really partial to Hartke, cuase they use aluminum cones, compared to the cheap paper ones everybody else uses. It has no feedback on it, great sound.

  Durability

Its very durable, yet surprisingly light, it weights roughly 40 pounds, and for its size, it seems very light. It can take a beating, and instead of having the normal cloth speaker cover, its metal grating, for durability, and its easier to hear through it that cloth.

  Overall

Once again, Great amp, doest get any better unoess you get a better Hartke, best amps around.
