Review Gretsch Reknown Maple Be Bop Kit

Review by a visitor on 9.12.2005

I purchased this drumset from Dynamic Percussion, in Manchester CT. I walked out the door @ $1450.00 plus state sales tax. The list price is near $2800.00.
I have been playing drums for 44 years, and since 1970, I have been playing a set of, at the time, top of the line American made Gretsch drums. The Be Bop kit I purchased is Identical (except an added length of 1 inch on the bassdrum on the Reknown set). The drums looked and sounded fantastic.

  Features

This drumset comes, as I bought it, as a shell pack. Meaning you get all mounting hardware, but no stands or cymbals. Drum sizes are : 18 x 15" bass drum, 8 x 12 & 14 x 14" tom toms, and a 5 x 14" snare, all with the same cherry red finish. American made shells and other parts are sent to Taiwan, where the drums are finished and assembled. They are identical to the more expensive American labled drums. First the aesthetics: Most furniture isnnullt finished as nicely as these drums, the woodwork is superb: the accurate bearing edges and the die cast hoops, make for easy and accurate tuning; all fastening points on the shell sit on rubbery plastic bases, and all inner-shell fasteners have flat and lock washers, which should help keep things tight, and prevent irritating buzzes; The locks on the mounting hardware lock very secure, though I found them to be a bit of overkill, and it can be a bit tricky getting the mounts locked in to where you want them, but nothing will move when you finally get it right. The bass drum legs firmly hold the drum in place. The chrome work is first class, and the snare throw-off is simple in design and function, and adds to the overall look of the snare drum, whch has, with the supplied Evans heads, dry and crisp.

  Playability

Playability was determined at the time of my purpose which, coming off an older set of Gretsch drums as I was, this set floored me with itnulls sound and quality construction.

  Quality

Inullve always enjoyed Gretsch drums, and the Renown kit has that unmistakable sound with the edition of a more lively tone. The construction is as well planned and executed as many more expensive kits I also checked out.

  Durability

This kit is certainly capable of an extended road trip. The materials which this set is built from is as good as Gretchnulls American Made drums.

  Overall

These drums exceeded my expectations in all areas, and I hope to be playing them for many years to come. If I thought there might arise a major complaint with this set, I wouldnnullt have bought them in the first place - killer drums!
