Review Gibson Les Paul Studio

Review by a visitor on 14.4.2007

I bought my 2005 LP Studio from Guitar Center for $900 new. I wanted a fixed bridge guitar for drop c tuning. I have several electric guitars, 1 Ibanez, 2 american Fender strats, 2 Shecters, 1 jackson, 1 charvel. I never play any of them anymore since I got my LP! I love it and its great for drop c and d tunings. Its got one hell of a growl! I highly recommend this guitar! One hell of a rock guitar but also sounds great clean!

  Features

I love everything about this guitar except the green tuners-but plan to replace them with lockers soon. I was also pretty lucky to get a nice flame maple top, havent seen any other studios with a top this nice. It also came with the white faux fur lined case. My buddy Brian really hooked me up.

  Playability

Great action, has a great sounding bottom end tone.

  Quality

This is the cleanest sounding guitar I have

  Durability

The green tuners suck! I have to retune frequently

  Overall

Inullm considering selling my fenders to buy another Les Paul! Has exceeded my expectations. Inullve heard some bad things about Les Pauls but mostly from "Fender guys" This guitar is the best guitar in its price range by far.

I got a 1998 Les Paul Studio from a small place here in St. Louis MO called Ron Busch Guitar studio. I paid $895 for it. The reasons I got this one instead of a new one was the price for one. Used is cheaper. The different hardware from then to now. My guitar has grover tuners instead of the green keys. Green keys go out of tune a lot faster than grovers do. I also liked the color of this one. It is emerald green. This is not a normal color for a LP studio. Gibson discontinued their gem series in 97 and used the left over paint on some guitars, mine is one of them. It looks really nice when itnulls clean. Price and performance, you cannullt beat this guitar. You cannullt beat the new ones either. Itnulls a Gibson. Itnulls a Les Paul. And itnulls only 1200.00. You cannullt beat that deal with a stick. If you would rather have grovers you can always chang them. Thatnulls what I was going to do, that is untill I found one the way I wanted it in the first place.

  Features

The guitar is great overall. The tuners, nut, and bridge work well togeter to keep the guitar in tune. I can take it out of the case after not playing it for a week and it will still be in tune. The electronics are solid as well. No noise. That means itnulls grounded properly and you wont die playing it. The pickups sound great individually, but combined they sound muddy. The warble going back and forth between the pickups fighting over who is herd more leaves a lot to be desired there. The pickups work great alone, but they cannullt seem to get along. The weight and solidness of the guitar is nice, nice and heavy. I like it for the sustain and tone of the instrument. Wood is good, and les pauls have a lot of it. I also like having total tonal controle of the instrament. A seperate volume an tone control for each pickup makes life a lot smoother when it comes to changing pick ups in the middle of a song. you already have the sound you need instead of trying to dial it in on the fly. Aside from arguing pickups itnulls a guitar with great features. A pickup swap might do the trick.

  Playability

This guitar out plays and out performs all other guitars in itnulls price range, and some guitars above it. As I said this guitar will play anything. Itnulls a gibson what more do i need to say. It plays and sounds amazing. The action is nice and level. There is nothing out of wack with it. It plays as good if not better than you would expect a Gibson to play. You spend a good chunk of money on something and it better live up to its price tag. Well this dose. Versatility and playability, no problem here.

  Quality

The sound is awsome. As Inullve said, it will play any style of music that you want it to. The build and electronic quality is great. This guitar will out live me if it is taken care of. The guitar does well with most amps and effects, and plays like a dream. I play through a mesa/boogie and it just sounds great. Marshallnulls are great to. Plug a great guitar into a great amp and you will achieve tonal nirvana. It does the job better than any other guitar that i have ever owned.

  Durability

The guitar was set up when I first got it and has never needed another setup. It stays in tune very well with the grovers. Green keys go out a lot faster, but that can be fixed with a quick retune or a tuner swap to grovers or any other quality tuner for that matter. Aside from the tuners itnulls a very reliable guitar. You could play for ever and this thing wont need any adjustment. This guitar is very gigable. if you cant gig with a gibson, what can you gig with. i donnullt know. The guitar is awsome. I play everything from jazz to metal and this thing can do it all. You can play anything with this guitar. Itnulls also durable as all get out. Big heavy pieces of wood. You couldnnullt break this thing with a sledge hammer (donnullt try it). Reliability and durability, what more could you want.

  Overall

Long story short. Itnulls a Gibson. What more do you want. Itnulls not even their entry level stuff. Itnulls a real Les Paul, it just doesnnullt have all the flashy stuff on it. Itnulls a great guitar. Play one, either younullll like it or not. That goes for all gear. Donnullt buy something on a wim. Test it and as many other things as posible. I might like it, you might not. thatnulls how gear works. Welcome to the world of guitars. Everyone stands behind something different. I love my les Paul studio. You might not. In any event, itnulls a great guitar. Built well, sounds great, and plays great. What more do you need.

I bought it from Musiciannulls Friend in August of null05. I paid $1199 for it.

  Features

It has everything you should expect from Gibson. The guitar is made of quality materials. Everything on this guitar just looks solid. The ebony finish is gorgeous, I wipe it down after session and I can see myself in it like a mirror. It came with a hardshell Gibson case which I feel should be mentioned because this is also high quality. I feel confident that my guitar wonnullt be damaged while travelling.

  Playability

When this guitar is in my hands I just cannullt put it down. Inullve played on a lot of different guitars and it has never felt this effortless. The neck is thick but I donnullt even notice, it just feels very natural. The rosewood fingerboard feels great and it seems that the fret Inullm looking for finds me. I can find any tone I want or need on this baby, she can sing, growl, and do anything inbetween. This guitar seems to become an extension of myself and I have a hard time putting her down.

  Quality

As I said before this guitar is solid. The hardware is high quality and I expect it to last for many, many years. I do have an electrical problem, the bride pickup volume knob cuts out in one spot, but the electronics are still under warranty and I plan to get this taken care of. Inullve just been putting it off because I hate the idea of giving up my baby for a few days.

  Durability

Again, the guitar is very solid. I would not beat on this guitar intentionally but I am confident that it can take a lot of abuse. This axe is made to be played and should stand the test of time. My only complaint is that it loses its tune easier than I had expected.

  Overall

I have wanted a Les Paul since I started playing guitar 8 years ago. I finally decided to buy one. Although I dreamed of having a Classic or Standard I couldnnullt quite justify spending that much money. I decided to go with the Studio and have not once regretted it. It is everything I ever expected out of a Gibson. The tone is just amazing, it feels great in my hands, it looks great, and I even think it smells good. If younullre like me and want a Les Paul but cannullt quite afford a Standard or Classic consider giving a Studio a try, you wonnullt regret it.

I bought my Gibson Les Paul Studio from a local(ish) music shop. I got it for £799 (Strap, lead, and all other gubbins thown in). I saw the guitar for cheaper online, but therenulls no way Inullm leaving my Gibsonnulls fate in the hands of the Postal Monkeys. Inulld seen them about for a while, theynullre beautiful guitars but what really made me buy it was seeing it in action with a local band, their lead guitarist made it scream, and I went weak at the knees - I had to have one. its got that signiture Gibson grunt to it which never sounds like itnulls out of control, and then out of no-where the mids coming weeping out in perfect harmony.

  Features

Itnulls got everything about it that made its big brothers famous. I was really impressed with how sturdy the 3-way selector switch feels. The red wine finish just twinkles in the light - and this is the first Gibson Inullve seen where the pick guard actually looks like itnulls supposed to be there. My fingers just glide across the smooth finger board, the frets donnullt seem like theynullre there. I got the red wine with chrome hardware, as Inullve been warned by quite a few people that the gold tends to wear VERY easily, subsequently making the whole guitar look tacky. Comes with Gibson USA Hardcase, very handy for gigging - and looks the part.

  Playability

Inullm going to say here Inullm not a prolific guitarist, I can hold my own, I like to be clever with the notes I play, without shredding up and down the fretboard, Inulld say Inullm more of a musician than a showman and this guitar anticipte every note that I play, it just makes me melt, Inullve got it going through a Marshall MG15MSII Ministack with no effects (other than slight reverb, anyone who owns this amp knows that is SLIGHT reverb) you have to trust the guitarnulls natural stability and it will never let you down. As I say Inullm more gentle with it, but every note is resonant and it can make a grown man cry. I have heard this guitar being absoluted hammered by lead guitarists, then the grunt comes out - THAT Gibson grunt. The action is set perhaps a little too high for me (inullve heard someone else comment on this aswell) but hey itnulls changable, tools of this quality can be moulded to suit.

  Quality

As Inullve said, there is no sound like a Gibson sound. Inullve owned a Telecaster before amongst other guitars that donnullt have a scratch on this gem, it plays itself. I love playing off the bridge pick up, it gives me the beautiful resonant sound that Inullm looking for, thatnulls my taste, but where this guitar is so versataille, you can fine tune it to get your sound by a quick twiddle of a couple of knobs. I havennullt performed with it yet, nor run it through my larger amps, I cannullt wait to though...in fact I think I might just make friends with my neighbours tonight and crank it up. Inullve heard it go, and therenulls nothing which deflates my confidence that this thing is going to scream.

  Durability

Well...to be fair, I havennullt had my Gibson for a week yet so it hasnnullt really endured anything, but there is no way Inullm down-rating this guitar. Switch feels sturdy, its got that Les Paul weight to it (some people hate it, I find it reassuring)which you know is going to be dangerous if you let it fall. But theynullre not designed to be slung about, inullm sure if nurtured itnulld be going longer than me.

  Overall

Overall, if anyone approached me and said "Inullm goimg to buy a Les Paul Classic/Standard" (Inullve never played a custom so I cannullt comment) Inulld tell them to save a good £400/500 and get one of these...unless younullre in love with binding, otherwise you are p*ssing your money up the wall - this is the only guitar you need in you collection, end of story.

I came back to Gibson after many years away from live playing. I used to own a 1978 Standard which I bought new and foolishly sold to fund a holiday when I was young and carefree!

Bought my currentLes Paul Studio (wine red with gold hardware) from a guy at work for around £550. It was pretty much mint condition and had been set up by a technician

  Features

Just your basic Les Paul but it has all the bits you need to get that Gibson grunt, without the fancy stuff like binding. To be honest, I have fallen totally in love with this guitar but am using it for what it was intended, rather than just admire its beauty. Tuners are green key and a bit iffy in places - it takes while to settle down in some venues and the G drifts off regularly, but maybe thatnulls just my playing!

I changed the pickups for a pair of Burstbuckers which cured the feedback problems Inulld been having and added a huge, sparkling, bell-like nullchimenull to the guitarnulls output. I would say that this is an essential mod for the Studio and you can get the Burstbuckers fairly cheap if you search e-bay. Mine are silver, which sort of clashes with the gold hardware, but hey, Inullm 45 and I don;t give a stuff about my looks any more, so itnulls the same with the guitar! Itnulls the results that count. In fact, I have a rather ambitious plan to turn the guitar into a Zemaitis lookalike if I can get hold of enough shell and abalone!

In plan-and-simple terms, this guitar - like the Gary Moore model, is a basic, stripped down Les Paul but it does everything you need it to at a bargain price. You can afford to tart it up later if you reallyu want to, but otherwise, itnulls a reliable and friendly work horse that brings out your playing better than any other guitar I know.

I think Les Pauls look better without the scratchplate, so I took mine off. The body has suffered as a result because I play with my fingers on a lot of stuff, but as I said elsewhere in the review, I donnullt care - it just adds to the worn-in look and itnulls not a fashion accessory.

  Playability

Les Pauls have a special feature which enables any guitarist to play 50% better than with a copy or other make. I cannullt explain this, but when I play my Strat, which cost several times more than the Gibson and is a lovely guitar, I somehow find myself being more inhibited and nullthoughtfulnull. The Les Paul just makes me want to give it a bloody good hiding and knock out riffs all over the place. It has a C profile neck which suits my chubby fingers and medium frets which are a bit untidy in places and maybe need some attention, but itnulls mostly a very playable and friendly guitar.

  Quality

See other comments - itnulls a bargain guitar that covers all the ground and does not fail to deliver if you know how to nullwoonull it and treat it with a little respect. Like Swiss Tony might have said, nullplaying a Les Paul studio is like making love to a beautiful woman; you have to hold her just so, settle her against you and run your fingers up and down her necknull. This is so cheesy, I may try this on the lads in the pub........

  Durability

Like I said, the guitar can misbehave a little in different environments, but I think this is true of many makes. I have a Deluxe Strat with locking tuners and a roller nut, which is a mod I will do to the Les Paul when I get round to it. If I get the funds, I may also add the Buzz Feiten tuning system, but I think that would be almost a vanity thing - it ainnullt that bad!

Otherwise, the guitar is totally reliable, especially when whacked through a valve amp with some EL34nulls in it. You just cannot beat a pair of Burstbuckers whacked right up.

The neck is as true now as when I got the guitar.

  Overall

Fan-bloody-tastic. Why would I ever change this guitar? It is everything a Les Paul should be and Inullve played a lot of them. I might add a more upmarket model at some point but nothing higher than a Standard, which is 100% better than the 1978 model I used to own. This one however, will always be on stage with me as the guitar that brought me back into live playing after a long time away.

I paid £689 plus £10 from Guitar Amp and Keyboard in Brighton

Good price and service, well from one of their staff!

  Features

Lovely guitar, just one mark on the side of the fretboard. Wine Red and gold hardware. Makes it look more eye catching as it does not have bindings associated with the Classic, Standard or custom. Gold smudges easy though and body finish also shows fingerprints

  Playability

Sounds awesome. Great Sustain. Now I have been fussing over the action. To me it looked high..Shop said it was low. Well it is good. As the frets are quite pronounced it looks like the strings are quite abit away from the neck.

Measuring the strings from the top of fret (12th) I have the following . 1.3mm treble E and 2.3mm bass E. This is normal apparently. Plays nice but I am going to have a play with this and try and lower it only slightly when I build up the confidence.

I guess my high is anothers low. The guitar was actually in tune out of the case.

No complaints..It was all I dreamed it to be...

  Quality

Good quality.. One mark on the side of the fret board. Each one apparently has a quirk but no marks from damage in any way shape or form. Looks very eye catching and has a simplicity about it not seen with the standard. It is just a fine guitar with an ace sound. What else is there?

  Durability

Very durable, well as a guitar could be. Mind it falling though as necks can break very easily due to the weight of it.

  Overall

Brilliant guitar for the money. Save up for a standard if that is your thing. Donnullt buy a standard for better sound. You really are paying for just the bindings. But they are very characteristic of a Les Paul so every one to their own. I didnnullt have the money but would have if i could. I wouldnnullt play it any more or love it any more. This guitar is part of me now and I would never change it. Guitars are a very personal thing i think. This baby rocks.....Buy one you wonnullt regret it.

bought it last year for 600 dollars. its a 1991 studio.

  Features

the guitar basically just kicks ass. everything about it is great, especially for a 14 year old guitar. the previous owner took very good care of it. im about to customize it though, because the bridge has gotten a bit rusty. but ill go with another tunomatic. the pickups arent that great, but they arent the original gibsons, theyre some shit designed by EMG. theyre good, but not near as good as the original pickups.overall, i say this guitar is awesome: the fretboard is great, bodys is gorgeous, etc. I give this guitar 5 "checks"

  Playability

wow. this guitar is incredible. its easy to do everything with it. despite what others say, its not hard at all to reach the higher frets. its great.

  Quality

this old studio sounds basically just as good as my friends brand new sg. it might even sound better if it had the original pickups. overall, its awesome here too.

  Durability

its lasted forever and looks brand new. nothing really needs to be fixed. only the usual rusty bridge/tailpiece.

  Overall

BUY THIS GUITAR! you can get them cheap as shit, in great condition, and can easily customize them to look really awesome. they sound great, and play easily. BUY ONE!

Gibson Les Paul Studio Wine Red Gold Hardware $1,200- Purchased From Guitar Center In Cincinnati Oh - Dec 10 2004

  Features

The guitar plays excellent and has a warm and full sound whether the neck or bridge pickup is being used. The guitar has a gorgeous finish and bright gold plating on the pickups and hardware. It is much lighter than most Les Pauls weighing about 5 lbs. It stays in tune pretty well but I do need a neck adjustment. The action is fast and smooth on bends and is overall an awesome guitar. I am completely happy with every feature.

  Playability

The action is extremely smooth and pretty fast too. I could tell a difference in the Les Paul over my last guitar, a $400 Jackson, as soon as i picked up the Paul. You can play any style with a Les Paul from classical to Blues or Rock.

  Quality

The tone is incredible and the pickups are extremely quiet.

  Durability

I havennullt had it long enough to know if it needs frequent adjustments. I havennullt adjusted it yet. It is very portable because of itnulls lighter weight and could be used very effectively live.

  Overall

I dont think i could have bought a better guitar for the money that i spent. A Les Paul is an excellent investment for anyone. It will last forever.

I bought my 2000 Gibson Les Paul Studio used at the Guitar Escape for $800 bucks. It was the owner of the store that owned the guitar before me.So he took good care of it.

  Features

Awsome features on it.Like the null59 rounded neck plays better than all my other guitars. And the maple on mahogany sounds nice and fat.I also like the 490 & 498T pickups they get the southern rock tones that i like. But just like some of the other reviews it doesnnullt stay in tune some times. But no big deal.

  Playability

The thing plays like your finger where a hot nife and the strings where like butter thats how good this thing plays.Like a hot nife through butter.Like i said before i love the 1959 rounded style neck itnulls a nice thick neck.Inulld put 10/46 gauge strings to keep it playable.Because i used the 11/48 gauge and they donnullt play near as well.I do all the stuff that a lead player does like extreme bends, some pretty fast fret work, harmonics and some nice chunky power chords. So the bottom line.It plays really really NICE!

  Quality

The sound is yet again AWSOME.I love the famous fat Les Paul tone that it gets.I use a peavey 1x15 Blues classic with Semour Duncan pickup booster and Zoom 5052.I have used lo profile necks and they hurt your thumb and wrist after a while. And this neck does not do that!At really high volume and gain it got a little microfonic. But thats natural at that volume and gain.Itnulls glued perfectly and the finish is great.Overall it was put together perfect!

  Durability

The thing is solid mahogany itnulls pretty durable.I herd the Nitrocellulose finish is not as durable as the cheaper finishnulls but looks 100% better.I did not play it live yet.But the next time i play live inullm gonna use it for sure.

  Overall

In my opinion it could not be any better.I mean it looks awsome it plays awsome and all for half the stinkinnull price of the standard. And donnullt get me wrong the standard rocks too but for around $2000 bucks. And thats just for some bindings, flame top witch is the same thing as the Studio just fancy and some differant pickups. But i could put in any pickups i want.So i think you get an awsome guitar not just for the price but as an overall guitar. If you go shopping for a nice guitar. The best deal is get it used but if you got money get a new one.But the Studio is like a Standard just not as fancy.

Bought the guitar in France brand new in 1992. Paid around the equivalent of $1000 back then. They are quite a lot more expensive in European countries like UK and France, and pretty much anywhere else outside the US.

  Features

Sounds good, however the paint job and varnish I find to be of shocking quality. black paint is wearing on the neck to reaveal an unsightly white undercoat. Weird. Also a few cracks in the varnish at the base of the neck. The guitar is now almost thirteen years old and some say that Inullm doing well. However Inullve seen older guitars in better condition. And mine always sleeps in its case. I donnullt understand why my LP Studio is turning to shit like that. I also donnullt find the finish on the fret board to be great. Was a beginner when I bought it and would certainly look at all these details if I were to buy a new one today. Inulld probably go for the Standard though...

  Playability

good playbility. Fun to play. Kind of heavy and get sore shoulder after a while, but thatnulls expected with a les paul. I like the finger board and the high notes are fairly easy to reach. The frets are a bit cumbersome, a bit too fat and can get in the way when playing fast.

  Quality

No noise, no feedback, no worries. Just the volume thing with the knob that I mentionned earlier. Sound quality good with distortion or clear volume, however a very rock/hard/heavy sort of guitar, not really for Funky tones.

  Durability

Tuning not super reliable, but decent. Sustain really good like a real Gibson. Got a few hassles with the volume knobs, nothing major, but I have to watch out when I play live not to loose any sound by turning the knob too far. Love the big fat sound backed by a Marshall. Struggle with adjusting the bridge a bit even though itnulls easy. Itnulls probably just me....

  Overall

Overall a decent guitar but I serioulsy wonder about the finish which I find poor for a Gibson and a US guitar. I would expect crap like that from a Japanese cheapie but not from a Gibson. Varnish and paint wearing off on the neck and behind (with rubbing against body) and has been for quite a while. I can even scratch it off with my finger nail. So I find that really poor.
SOund wise, I am pleased as I like fat sounds, and a good sustain. Performs fairly well live. WOuld probably benefit from a visit to a luthier for a few adjustments. I would still go for Gibson again but would probably spend a few more bucks on a standard.

I got my les paul studio from my parents. you can get them from almost any music store. the price range is from $1,000.00-$3,000.00. it is a great guitar.

  Features

the best thing about the studio is the way it plays. itnulls not just like a guitar that plays, but the studio plays nice and gentle. There are some good points about this guitar such as...
1=carved maple top.
2=59 les paul rounded.
3=22 frets
4=two volume, two tone, three way switch.
5=Bridge= tune-o-matic
6=plating finsh,-chrome or gold brushed chrome or gold on platinum.
7=decent price range for a good guitar
8=standard tuning pegs
9=6 strings, left and right handed manufactured
10=overal, fun to play

  Playability

you can reach more than enough desired resluts with the gibson les paul studio. if it were compared to another guitar the gibson would have nore verioty.

  Quality

sounds are great, easy play, nice guitar

  Durability

this item is very good. there are no weak spots on it. fine crafted, nice play. itnulls pretty much one of my favorite guitars ever. tune every two days, daily.
adjusting is fine and definitily enough gigs for live performance.

  Overall

i would have to give this guitar my highest rating a 10 out of 10. itnulls just a great guitar to use, fun to play, easy to play, and to me it sounds awesome.

I got this guitar of eBay for about $650.

  Features

Prior to this Les Paul, Inullve owned about 4 or 5 LPnulls previously, and this one really isnnullt a exception to the Gibson namesake. Electronics are good, although the treble pickup is quite weak. I find the plastic nut (What the hell were they thinking?) to be cheap for a $1000 guitar, so I replaced it with a bone nut and Inullve had no problems with keeping it in tune. The solid mahogany slab is what I like about it most. Inullm tall, so I got no problems with the weight.

  Playability

I got this one with a ebony neck, and I got a fret job for it after I bought it. The action is fit, and it tears. I changed the bridge pickup to a EMG-85, decided I didnnullt like it, and went with a Gibson 500T. It plays what I play, and I love it.

  Quality

Everything on this guitar is pretty high-grade, minus no binding and a cheap-as-shit plastic nut. I find it performs better than any other Studio Inullve ever played, probably because of the fret job, and I like ebony more than rosewood. Itnulls a great guitar, nothing else to say.

  Durability

This guitar is VERY fucking durable. I tour around the US in a punk/hardcore band and I play about 200 shows every year. This guitar NEVER failed me, ever. The action stays fit, and the tuning (Bone nut) stays perfect throughout the constant moving and inclimate weather changes.

  Overall

I have another LP Studio, and this guitar plays better than it. It plays just the same as a LP Custom, without the eye-candy. Itnulls a excellent guitar, I leave it at that.
