Review Fender Standard Telecaster

Review by a visitor on 8.9.2010

I got my Standard Tele around mid 2008. Music and Arts Center has been my choice for most of my musical equipment since I started playing again in 2005.

I have always considered myself a Strat guy and currently own a standard one as well. I felt that the tele would be a nice compliment to the Strat, and it is. As I recall it was around $400.00, no case but set up included.

  Features

The features are well known on the Standard Tele, you get what you get. Now I've been playing more on than off for over forty years and have a strong background in music education, live plaly and studio work. So let's address the pick ups...They are just fine from the factory! I don't buy mid quality equipment and try and morph it into a piece that sells for 3 times as much. If you have pick up hum issues, turn the volume all the way down until you are ready to play. It is really that simple.

A neat trick the set up guy did for me was to invert the control plate so that the selector switch is at the bottom, away from my hand hitting it and the volume control is at the top, where my pinky finger can turn it while I am playing. (I find my Tele really is at it's best this way.)

  Playability

I do enjoy playing this guitar quiet alot, though I don't play it as much as I do others. But when I do play it, and the piece is right, there is no substitution for a Telecaster.

  Quality

I buy Standard Fenders because I do not intend to go out on the road at 50+ years old. For home use, this is exactly what I want.

If I was 25 years old, I would (and have) toured with equipment similar to the Standard Tele and have done just fine. I guess I am saying don't think you have to spend a whole lot to get a good quality guitar.

  Durability

I have had no issues with the quality and durability of my Standard Tele. It stays tuned as well as any guitar I own, intonation is good and it has always done as well as I have expected it to.

  Overall

This guitar is a work horse if that is how you choose to use it. I am totally satisfied with this guitar as is and do recommend it to any and all who are interested in owning/playing a Telecaster.

Thanks and Rock on!

Bought second hand, but in as new condition from a guy in my local area. ?200 - approx $400 US - was initially looking for a Strat, but this one came up and was a really good deal in this nullas newnull condition.

  Features

Fixtures and fittings seem very good quality - tone pots seem sturdy - pickup selector is very good - the finish is the best thing about it - Inullve never been a sunburst fan but the finish on this is unbelievable - Also every guitar Inullve ever owned has a rosewood fretboard, this is maple and inullm not disappointed with it - just gotta get used to it I think! Two pick-ups seem nullOKnull. Not great, but the bridge pick up gives a twang sound, as younulld expect, and the neck pick up is nice and clean. I know I knew this before I bought it, but I wish it had a humbucker. A weak point Inullve noticed (as Inullve seen some other people mention) is that it doesnnullt stay in tune well, which is a bit annoying. I like a locking nut, but no option to have one of these.

  Playability

Itnulls OK. I sold A 1986 Japanese ARIA pro mega metal to buy this. I wish I hadnnullt. I was advised not too, as the Japanese Arianulls are true quality, and this wouldnnullt be as good playability and quality wise. The people who advised me are right!!! This isnnullt a bad guitar, itnulls just not the quality Inullm used too. I also own a USA Hamer which beats the tele in playability anyday.

  Quality

Very simple, pickups seem quiet - quite versatile for only having 2 single coils.

  Durability

Inullve never gigged this guitar, but I wouldnnullt have any doubts about doing it. Seems a strong, well made guitar.

  Overall

Put it this way, for ?200 I cannullt complain. The tele is better than any other modern guitar I couldnullve bought for that price, but donnullt think younullre going to get a nulltopnull quality instrument, because younullll be disappointed. Itnulls good, but not great.

Bought it from nullReidys.comnull for ?309. It was a bargain for the amount of guitar I got in return.

  Features

Inullve heard a lot of people complain about the fact it only has 21 frets, if younullre not a good enough player to work around this you should practice more often. Perhaps if it was like my EC1000 with 24 frets it would make a difference, but as it is inullm not complaining. Great guitar.

  Playability

In terms of value itnulls fantastic. Younullll struggle to go too heavy without a lot of buzzing, but then if you want heavy buy a different guitar. Nice smooth neck and action, feels very fast.

  Quality

Feels extremely well put together. In terms of sound: Blues, jazz... theynullre what this guitar was made for, and it shows.

  Durability

No problems with tuners, I check them occasionally to see if they need tightening, they never do. Itnulls taken a couple of knocks, nothing serious. Itnulls tough and hasnnullt suffered.

  Overall

Much better than i expected, by far. If this guitar was stolen inullm not sure inulld bother buying a better one as this has everything you need for the styles that compliment its sound.

I bought mine from Oklahoma Music, inullm in Alabama. had it shipped with a hard shell case for it...i got about $448 in case and guitar both...when it i had to do ALOT of neck adjusting. neck was warped with way too much relief, took me about 2 months to work all that out...adjusted the pickups which are noisy when not touching the strings but sound great...i changed the neck plate to a custom engraved neckplate thatnulls gold and replaced the white pickguard with a pearloid one. and then had my name put on the body in chrome.

  Features

i love the features of this guitar...everything very simple and basic, but very solid.

  Playability

i was used to playing my old Fender Lead 2...so this guitarnulls neck is like 1/8" wider than the Lead 2. but i absolutely love the playing of this guitar..not too good for rhythm guitar because the strings are a little too wide for it, but since i play lead guitar, this guitar is perfect.

  Quality

the "twang" is great with this guitar, my old Fender Lead 2 has the smooth mellow tone, and this tele adds the twang to the faster stuff..i do the old country and rockabilly and this guitar is great.

  Durability

everything about this guitar is very solid...once i got the neck set, inullve never had no more problems. sound gets better as it ages out...

  Overall

when i first started with this...i was dissappointed a little because of all the work i had to put it in...but now, i have $500 invested in it and money couldnnullt buy it from me. i have to recommend this guitar to anyone who is looking for one. mine is midnight wine red...LOVE it...

if you get one, change the pickguard to something fancier, if you can afford to you can get some noiseless pickups but not really needed because i havennullt changed mine...just a great guitar that is very solid...

I looked around on the internet for the cheaopest deal I could find, especially because Inullm left handed, and the final price came to about ?370.

  Features

Everyone else has already described it in more detail. Three way selector, tone knob, volume knob, single coil pickups. Reasonably unique in having no hole for a whammy bar, a down side to funk playing, even though it is an excellent funk guitar tone wise. Looks very nice as well.

  Playability

The bridge pick up is something everyone I know has changed, and Inullm getting round to it. Not great, but not bad. Easy to play though.

  Quality

Very nice for funk and blues, but also good for metal etc., especially through a dirty distortion. Chris Cornell used it (Soundgarden), so its not pussy. The pickups do get a hum going so change the bridge one.

  Durability

Stays in tune well, although the jack plug fell out recently and had to undo the volume plate, which somehow raised the pickups. But it is from Mexico lol. Seems strong, no dents or chips yet even though its coming on 6 months.

  Overall

I didnnullt choose a strat cos everyone has one and theynullre overrated, and I didnnullt get a les paul because their too expensive. Theres just something about telecasters that some people are drawn to I think lol.
I cant see it being my first choice guitar in a 5 years time maybe, especially if I get a band going properly, but I would gig it and it would always be first back up.

Bought in on-line for 365.00...it was new

  Features

Playing is great... pickups leave a little bit to be desired....not as bad as the Strat stabdard pickups.....Volume is easy to get at, so is tone....lots of history here, and it feels that way. Just a good solid guitar...stays in tune, can knock it aroud...very durable...

  Playability

I just love playing this tele......I have a strat which has been modified, but sometimes, one guitar wonnullt do...Fender has such a strong history of quality (like Martins) that itnulls hard to imagine playing something else...... A strat sound here. then the tele......goo stuff.....wouldnnullt trade it

  Quality

just a good choice, pure and simple......

  Durability

as stated above, doesnnullt need much....rough and tough, and simple, which is what itnulls all about......

  Overall

I bought the tele, then I replaced the pickups with the vintage noiseless...it really made a big diffrence...although the standard pickups arennullt that bad ...My only wish is that Fender would realize the importance of putting GREAT pickups with their GREAT guitars......

Bought this Guitar in Dublin for 599 Euro

  Features

Maple neck, beautiful feel, tone and volume knobs, Three way pickup selector. Colour is Midnight wine. Mexican made. Just your stanbdard Tele Pickups. Three ply scratch guard. Finish is excellent and it sounds no different than the American one I tried.Sounds excellent, some people might say it has a lot of hum but the hum is not that bad and itnulls a trade off for that thinny Tele sound abd that acustic feel when you play it clean.

  Playability

I have a Hank Marvin Strat also made in mexico and althought the Tele was cheaper it is up to the same standards. The tele offers you a different range to the Strat. However it compares well.

  Quality

From blues to really raunchy gain this guitar gives and gives again. You could even use this beauty instead of your semi acustic it handles and sounds so natural and wooden when you want it. I really am amazed at its potential and would reccomend from a novice to a seasoned veteran to buy this guitar. The noise is not that much just a low buzz just keep on playing and it dissapears replced by rich sounds. Some people say the pickups are weak but I found them excellent

  Durability

Very reliable and durable, with the weight of the alder body you get excellent sustain even though the neck is bolted on.

  Overall

I choose this guitar because i wanted just that ordinary no bull=shit sounf of the sixties tele anf thought I would get it from the standard model. Furthermore I could not afford to pay one thousand two hundred Euro for the American model. This guitar has exceeded my expectations. I will never sell it and I am planning in the furure to buy a Tele with the Humbuckers just for a further sound adventure. These fender guitars have made me enthusiastic about playing guitar again I am only sorry I didnnullt buy one before

I bought this guitar from a small shop for $325. I shopped around for quite a while and finally found this beauty.

  Features

My guitar has a sunburst finish with the maple neck (I think all standard teles come with the maple neck). The guitar has a very timeless classic, yet modern look to it. The tuners are ok for a stock guitar, I also have a gibson model les paul with grover tuners on it and probably only have to tune that dude once a week, but the tuners on the tele are hold up decent compared to the paul. The G string tends to go out of tune after some really good hard core bends, but most of the time it stays in tune. The bridge pick-up is amazing for this price, it has just the edge Inullve looked for, and through the right amp you can get a nice biting distortion that can range from strait up punk rock to classic blues. The neck pickup is pretty terrible for my ear when the volume is cranked up on the guitar, the trick is to roll of the volume knob to about half to 3/4 and the pickup has an entirely different tone, nice and bluesy, think roll ballad. The master volume is the secret weapon on the guitar as no two volume settings will give you the same tone, experiment with it. The same could be said about the master tone, although settings less the halfway off sound fairly muddy and sub-par.

  Playability

I was amazed at how fast a tele could play. After playing a paul for years this guitar was a welcome relief to my back, and my fingers. After adjusting to the longer scale I was amazed at how much faster I could play, and Inullm not a fast player to begin with. I could reach all the notes with relative ease, and the neck being thinner then the paul allowed me to hold my hand higher of the neck and made it easier to allow open strings to ring clearer. I would like another fret, but I rarely ever find that I need 22. If you really need 22, get good at bending that note at 21, its worth it.

  Quality

Excellent quality, nothing has happened that really makes me point a finger and say that sucks. The factory nut has some to be desired, but then again EVERY factory nut sucks. The neck pickup maybe a little loosely wound, but again the quality is still amazing for a guitar in this price range.

  Durability

This guitar hasnnullt seen a wall or a drop yet, I got it because of the looks and I donnullt entend to test its duribility too often. I knocked the tone knob off the first week I got it, but a simple srew was all that needed to be tightened. Nothing has happened that would merit anything less then a "good" rating.

  Overall

The real reason I bought this guitar is the looks, it just looks awesome. I saw a lot of different sunburst teles, and some of the woods just didnnullt look good under the finish, but the grains in this one are exactly what I am looking for. I love this guitar, I put some heavier gauge blues strings on it (DRnulls pure blues 11-50) and they seem to be made for this guitar. I would like a better neck pickup, but again if the volume is rolled off this one sounds pretty good. I find this guitar to be very versital, I see people from Jim Root of Slipknot to Bruce Springstein playing a tele. The beauty of the standard is that itnulls cheap and replacing some parts to customize it for yourself is pretty easy. Add a humbucker and you get a whole new sound, and the guitar is heavy enought that you get good sustain, even with the bolt on neck. Shop around, make sure you find some good wood if you are getting a see through finish, each guitar has a different soul and if you give a tele a try inullm sure younullll finally find a soul mate (unless you want to play Korn Krap).

This is just a standard Mexican Telecaster. I bought it at a local music shop for around 350 dollars.

  Features

Letnulls start at the bottom and go down. First, the headstock. I really like the headstock shape. I like the thiness of it and the tuners are fine. They are notlocking or anything, but they work fine. Next, the neck. My guitar is all maple in comparison to maple with a rosewood fretboard. The neck is a tad thicker than most guitars, but it doesnnullt bother me too much. 21 frets is a not really enough; I would have prefered 22. Now the body. I love the shape of teles, and is a dark grey. Itnulls a little heavy, but not to the extent of a Les Paul. It features too pickups; one at the neck which is a little hollow sounding, and one at the bridge that has a Zeppelin style sound. It has a 3 way selector switch one volume knob, and a tone knob. The tone knob kinda muddys the sound a little bit when its rolled down.

  Playability

I love this guitar in terms of playability. The neck pickup gives a really nice bluesy sound and the bridge gives that great twnag for a country or classic rock kinda sound. If you wanna play metal, donnullt even try this guitar. You wonnullt be impressed. One complaint I have here is the single coils produce a lot of buzz next to other electronics. The neck is easy to slide around on, and the guitar feels great. Inullll give it a 4 because of the buzz.

  Quality

Sound quality is wonderful. Like I said... the buzz is a little distracting but itnulls fine for 350 dollars. I think it performs wonderfully. you can get any sound out of it you want except for heavy heavy metal.

  Durability

My tele is wonderful in terms of durability. I havennullt dropped it or anything, but I have hit against the wall and itnulls amazing how little the pain scratches. Nothing has happened that would make me not want to give it a 5 in this category.

  Overall

My opinion is BUY THIG GUITAR! If you have never played a tele, I suggest you try one. They are very wonderful instruments for almost any style of play. Ill give this item a 4 because of some minor things i donnullt like about it.
