Review Fender Frontman 25R

Review by whiteHendrix on 31.3.2006

Bought it from Zzounds for $135 and free shipping. It was a choice between the Fender and one of the Marshall MG combo amps, and I didnnullt hear many good words about Marshall combos.

  Features

The FM 25R is a fairly good practice/beginners amp. It has louder gain compared to the 15R, and more reverb. The clean channel with reverb is great for that rockabilly and surf tone, and the overdrive, when adjusted right, will output some good punch for that hard rock (AC/DC) sound. The Headphone jack comes in handy when playing late night and donnullt want a pissed off family member or neighbor to jam your guitar into the speaker. The Line-in RCA inputs are also handy if you have a Y cord (two RCA plugs to one 1/8" plug") and a CD or Tape walkman. Of course an iPod can be used as well, but I have no plans to buy one.

  Playability

This amp is no Marshall stack, but it can hold its own. Clean channel has the nullboom-chicka-boomnull tonability you hear on Johnny Cash songs, but may sound a bit damp if using humbucker pickups. Overdrive is very good, but succeptible to receiving radio signals when atmospheric conditions are right.

  Quality

The sound quality is better than most amps in this price range, but as stated above, sounds a little damp when using humbucker pickups. Using a wah-wah pedal on the overdrive channel sounds pretty muddy, so Inulld recommend using an outboard fuzz pedal to keep the signal somewhat clearer. This thing does have an odd peak of volume at null2null and up, so unless younullre gonna use headphones, keep it under null2null when playing at odd hours of the night.

  Durability

This amp is built pretty durable for an indonesian-made product. The cabinet feels pretty solid, and the front screen will hold up to cats who like to shred. The speaker is impressively durable and will hold up on all dials at null10null, almost makes ya wanna push it and go Spinal Tap on it by adding an 11th level on the controls.

  Overall

All in all its a great little amp with some serious punch. Granted its only a foreign-made solid state amp, but what do you expect to buy brand new for that price? It suits me fine to play my Squier Strat and Ibanez AFS75T artcore semi-hollowbody. Anyone thinking of buying this will not regret it. It has enough power to use in small to moderate performances, and good enough to record with. Remember, Eric Clapton uses small amps to record his music.

Bought from Musiciannulls Friend, it was a blem with a slight cosmetic defect and cost $118 with shipping included. Bought it with the idea that it would be a great practice amp, also itnulls an attractive little thing, looks like a scaled down version of the old blackfaces.

  Features

I sentence summary: Great clean, lousy overdrive. The clean is shiny and makes you shout "Yeah! Fender!" The little spring reverb is pretty acceptable as well. Unfortunately the overdrive is very buzzy. You have a tough time hitting the "sweet spot" where it just gently overdrives. And when the sound decays therenulls an annoying buzzy sound that accompanies it. When the gain is cranked past 7 or so itnulls not bad if you like the super hi-gain artificial overdriven sound with mega-sustain. But itnulls hard to get a subtle crunchy sound out of it.

  Playability

Depends on your style. The clean is good enough so Inulld consider A/B ing the amp with another one and using this one as my clean/chorus/reverby rhythm unit. Inulld seriously have reservations using the distortion side of it, though. And this sucker is loud, maybe too loud for a practice amp if you can imagine that. 25W into a high efficiency speaker means itnulls hard to control the loudness for "bedroom level" practice. It sounds like a lot bigger amp.

  Quality

Not particularly noisy. No effects to speak of except reverb.

  Durability

This thing is built pretty darn well. I have had it apart several times and itnulls PC board construction, of course, but the layout is nice and neat and it is constructed durably. Cabinet is not bad. You could play out with this from the standpoint of durability. Probably you should take care not to whack the knobs too hard since theynullre soldered directly to the main board but so are a lot of other amps.

  Overall

Pro: Looks cool, lightweight and convenient, easy to work on or mod if you want, nice clean sound, nice reverb, LOUD

Con: Distortion is buzzy, itnulls really loud and hard to control the volume (goes from too quiet to ear-splitting from 1 to 3 on the vol), for some reason distortion pedals donnullt sound good on the clean channel (maybe something to do with preamp headroom or EQ?)

I bought a Fender Frontman 25R for $135 new from a local guitar shop.

  Features

Overall itnulls a pretty good amp, especially for the money. This amp has no real effects, aside of reverb.

  Playability

You cannullt do much better for the price.

  Quality

It doesnnullt muddy up under high gain like one might expect. When turned up to higher levels, the gain does tend to sound rather fuzz box-like. Under less than null8null the gain is pretty nice. On the acoustic setting, the sound is pretty dry, though on a guitarnulls rhythm pickup, it sounds even and smooth.

  Durability

It is a little small for gigging, but is perfect for a dorm room, or small performance. Itnulls a pretty solid little amp though, and my copy has withstood a beating.

  Overall

I chose it because it was the best I could afford. On most topics, it does pretty well. If I had the money I would trade up to a Marshall. But this has been a nice amp for the price especially.

I bought it at Guitar Center about 7 months ago. I think I paid around 140.

  Features

No effect but still a good amp. Treble, Mid, and Bass adjustments, Gain, Clean/Drive channels, Headphone jack, and Footswitch jack.

  Playability

Doesnt have the clarity of the more expensive Fender amps. But it good enough for me, I dont play in a band or anything, yet.

  Quality

Doesnt crackle much when turned up loud, it just not a very clear sound. No effects, other than my pedal.

  Durability

Probably no big enough for live gigs, but big enough to play on at a friends house or whatever you want.

I think it is a good beginner amp, but I wont buy another one in if it blows. It does what I need it to do so Im happy with it. Im thinking about getting a Line 6 or somthing bigger, but I havent made up my mind yet.
