Review Epiphone Les Paul Standard

Review by a visitor on 3.9.2010

I bought this in April 2010, the day I dropped my EP LP Studio and cracked the neck. It was a Sunday afternoon and Music & Arts Center was about to close for the day.

I called and inquired about the availability of another Studio model and was told that it could be ordered and delivered in a couple of weeks.

I ran up to the music store (located close to home) quickly. I looked at 2 different Epiphone Les Paul's and chose the Standard.

It is a good looking instrument. Very well crafted, balanced and set up nicely. It is a bit heavier than the Studio model, but that has not really been an issue.

This guitar is much more of a Les Paul than the Studio model. The Studio, somewhat stripped down, was on it's way to becoming my main instrument. I have reverted back to my MIM Stratocaster.\

There is nothing specifically wrong at all with the LP Standard, but it is not like I expected it to be.

I paid around $400.00 for this which is about the same as I paid for each of my Strat, Tele and Studio LP. In time maybe I will grow to appreciate this more than I currently do. For now I use it for recording rhythem and highlights but stick my leads with the Strat or the Tele.

I originally got the Studio LP just to record some souther rock covers to impress my then girlfriend, now wife. I really got attached to this guitar and was compelled to replace it when it broke. (I've been playing for 41 yrs and this is the first and only guitar I have broken.)

If you want that Gibson feel and sound without the price tag, the Epiphone Les Paul Standard is a pretty good way to go.

I just am not sure that this is what I was expecting. I bought it on the rebound so I can only blame myself. I would have piddled away that $400.00 by now anyway and at least I have a nice ax to show for the money.

It plays as well as any Gibson LP I have played. easy action smooth tone throughout fret board.

I think this is the model I have, however Im not sure of the price tag, because this was given to me as my first guitar, as a birthday present.

I bought this guitar from my local guitar shop, where they had a good selection of guitars to start on. I had been looking around for a les paul, because I thought they were beautiful, and I couldnnullt stand getting a squire, or a fender copy, because of how common they are.

This guitar was second had, had no defects anywhere, looked like a les paul and sounded amazing! It was perfect!

It was between this, and a large semi acoustic copy of a gibson E series. But it just had to be this guitar.

  Features

Solid mahogany body. Maple veneer over carved top. Set mahogany neck. Slim taper neck. Rosewood fingerboard. Chrome-covered Alnico Classic humbuckers. Cream body and fretboard binding. Chrome hardware.

* Solid mahogany body
* Maple veneer over carved top
* Set mahogany neck
* Slim taper neck
* Rosewood fingerboard
* Chrome-covered Alnico Classic humbuckers
* Cream body and fretboard binding
* Chrome hardware

Two Humbucker pickups
Three way pickup selector. (back, both, front)
Two tone controls
Two volume controls

The volume controls and tone controls are responsive, and have great depth.

Cannullt have a whammy bar, because of the way the strings are set up, bu you can easily buy a whammy pedal

  Playability

Sounds great playing heavier music, blues, reggae, funky, lead guitar, rhythm guitar. This is where it shines, my friend who owns a fender strat, and a fender telecaster often comments on how this sounds like a much more expensive guitar. He has also said he wants one now!

  Quality

Sounds like a much more expensive guitar. Very clean when distortion is off, sounds really great when heavy distortion is on. Great with effects, sounds better than indienulls, fenders.

  Durability

The guitar is always steady while playing, but it does need to be tuned up quite often.

My strap broke, and it swung into the corner of a wall, and it only made a small dent in the guitar.

Quite a heavy, and strong build.

  Overall

pure bliss, can play any type of music

a must buy

This guitar has everything you need. A full stack of tone and volume controls, dual humbuckers, a set neck and aan extremlly nice finish. Looks awsome!!

  Playability

Mine has the 60nulls slim tapper neck and a fret board thatnulls flat as can be. My fingers fly across it. I love playing theis thing. Some people have mentioned limitted access to the higher frets. Itnulls a Les Paul, single cutaways are all like that. If you want full access, buy an SG. All in all, I love it. Inullve been an active musician for about 20 years and I have played many guitars. My Epi is right up there with the best of them. Set up from CG was very good. Frets are perfect. Inullve heard of people having problems with these items. You basically just need to sit down and play a few models to make sure yours dosennullt have any problems.

Here is where the price tag drops from $2000.00 to $400.00. There are minor imperfections in the some of the finish (the binding around the neck and the inlays) They are some minor that nobody will notice but me. The electronics are not bad, but not good either. I was actually very suprised with the Korean pick-ups when I plugged into my Marshall Half-stack. The Bridge pick-up sounds good, the neck pick-up is a bit muddy, but not bad. I pllan to gig with this guitar and will be changing the pots, toggle and pick-ups to genuine Gibson USA partsvery soon. The wood used is not the same quality as a Gibson, but still very good and as Inullve said the finish is beautiful. The Bass player in my band has also been a musician for many years. He owns a recording studio, and produces bands. He gave me a hard time at first about buying an Epiphone. When I plugged it in, He agreed that if his eyes were closed, he;d KNOW that he was hearing a Les Paul.

Very Pleased with the Guitar. I would definatley recommend this guitar. You can get a 400.00 guitar and put about 200.00 worth of electronics into it and for 600.00 you have Les Paul thatnulls no different that a GIbson execpt for the wood thatnulls used.

Inullm not trying to Flame anyone in my review, but I cannullt hold back. The guy that is saying a Squire is better than this guitar, just dosennullt know what henulls talking about. Squires are garbage. Any Guitar thatnulls sold in a package with an amp and all the other crap at Costco or Samnulls Club for 150.00 is not going to be good. Inullve plyed many Strats over my time and several Squires. The only one I would ever buy is a American or Japanesse model. American Strat $1000.00, Japanesse model almost imposible to find outside of Japan. I am slightly biased (I donnullt like strat necks) but this guitar is SO MUCH better than MIM or MIK strats. Do not waste you money.

Didnnullt buy it yet, but have played several, and I know itnulls a nice guitar at a great price.

  Features

Doesnnullt have anyhting more or less than a Gibson...so...Itnulls good.

  Playability

Like I said, Inullve never been disappointed with this. My favourite guitar is and always will be my customized Fender Strat, but I love Les Pauls for the more comfortable neck and the easy playability.

  Quality

Great guitar. New pickups would be good...but even as is, not bad.

  Durability

Great guitars, good sound and very versatile, never had a problem with them.

Pretty good guitar at a great price. If you can afford it, get the Gibson, not the Epi., there is a difference *even the wood its made from* but...yeah, great value, I recommend it for sure.

PS Just wanted to say, to the guy who posted before me...Squier is to Fender what Epiphone is to Gibson. Itnulls a lower end version. So, Fender Strat = great. Squier Strat = not so great. Not the other way around. Do your research. Thanks.

Refused to buy it because the workmanship is just shoddy. I think that the people who rate these high are just unfamiliar with a quality instrument. You can get a Squire with better tone and quality than these. It is just a shame.

  Features

The features are really a useless question. It is what it is.

  Playability

Necks are always an issue with these instruments. The frets need dressed. I mean, how long does it take to sand and crown an instrument? Less than an hour if you arennullt a Korean kid. If you look at any online merchant of musical instruments you will see the greatest returns are the Epinulls Les Pauls.

  Quality

See above, sound is not good. I donnullt whose pickups you put in this thing it will not change anything about its crap factor. The leopard cannot change its spots.

  Durability

It would probably last a while, just not in my stable.

  Overall

Just plain poor. Go check one out at GC and be objective. Play the Squire first, then an Epi anything you like, then go back to the Squires or even the cheaper Fender Standard Strats. You will see what I mean. The Cali-Mexi men and women are superior craftsmen compared to our overseas counterparts.

I bought this from Music and arts in Woodbridge VA. I paid $599. I bought this in protest agianst the price of the Gibson les paul standard. A musician should not have to pay that much for the same guitar with plastic tuners. I know! theynullre not really the same, but change about $400 in parts in younullre pretty darn close.

  Features

As I mentioned the EPI is not a Gibson. But, Change the humbuckers, switch, tone control switches, and a couple other small things and you have come close to the sound of a true Gibson but for a grand less, but then you have a grand invested. After doing this, and after I deciding on a search for a more playable lead instrument, I found a Schecter C-1 classic for $599 stock with many upgrades I added to the EPI to get it sounding sweet. I think the EPI LP is well made and a fine guitar, but the compitition is getting tight out there and in order for EPI to compete with Schecter and others, they need to improve their electronics. The stock humbuckers on the EPI are not very good. Another thing to concider for all you lead players is the EPI, like the Gibson, has a very skinny neck, 1.68 inches at the nut, and has the neck heel at the bass that tends to get in the way while playing high on the neck. This didnnullt seem to bother Jimmy page, but It does bother me. After the work I put into my EPI, I like it and use it for blues and other rythm chops, but donnullt prefer it for lead playing.

  Playability

I cannot play lead very well on this guitar because of the skinny neck and the heel at the base. Rythm is very nice.

  Quality

The quality of the electronics can be improved on this guitar to level it with competition.

  Durability

Solid as a rock. The korean are doing a great job on quality for the guitars comming out of that country. If you can deal with the weight of an LP, then the EPI LP S is great for gigs.

  Overall

I do not regret my EPI.

I purchased my Epiphone Les Paul Standard from Musiciannulls Friend in June of 2000 for $549.00. Itnulls the Heritage Cherry Sunburst model.

  Features

For the price range, the cosmetics are very nice; the color and texture of the cherry flame finish looks really cool! The only minor things that occurred were with the pickup toggle switch and the strap lock post near the neck; these are common problems that occur even with Gibsons. Both were easily fixed by using epoxy to affix the strap post back in place, and taking off the toggle switch and re-soldering it; both are fine now without any further problems. The pickups are factory stock Gibson PAFnulls and they sound great; Inulld never replace them unless they went out. I tested both pickups on an output meter and they were "hot", peaking at 15; thatnulls pretty good (and loud) for stock pickups!

  Playability

The rosewood fretboard is smooth and nice to the touch, neck is fast and quite sturdy, good balance and action. You will rarely, if ever need to set the action, intonation or adjust/tighten the truss rod.

  Quality

Epiphone Les Pauls are commonly called "cheap" and "inferior" to Gibsons, and some go as far as to refer to them as "copies", which they most definitely are not. Epiphone is owned by Gibson USA, but are not made in the U.S.; most if not are made in Korea. In terms of tone, Inullve played my Epiphone LP Standard back to back with a Gibson LP Standard through the same amp and I heard almost no difference between the two; the only noticeable difference are the woods used. Epiphones are commonly made with alder tops (though some are maple) and mahogany bodies, and Gibson tops and bodies are usually high-grade maple. In general, Epiphones are much lighter and easier on your shoulders and back, but still retain a good balance.

  Durability

Very reliable guitar; stays in tune very well except in colder conditions, in which case the G string frequently goes out of tune even if the string is already "broken in" and stretched out before playing. Occasionally, younullll also have to tighten up the nut around the input jack for the guitar cord as it will loosen in time, especially if you play a lot; this happens frequently with Gibsons, as well.

  Overall

Inullm very happy and satisfied with my Epiphone; Inullve owned my Standard going on 5 years now, and it sounds and looks just as great now as when I first took it out of the box. I purchased an Epiphone null56 Reissue Gold Top Les Paul 2 years ago with P-90 "soapbar" single coils and am quite happy with that one, as well! Gibsons are nice to own if you can afford one, and if you can, by all means, buy it. But if you want virtually the same LP features, playability and tone on a "budget", look no further than an Epiphone; you wonnullt be disappointed!

Epiphone Les Paul Standard
flamed cherry sunburst
guitar center in Atlanta
bought used for $350
hardly played at all so basically new

  Features

When I first took my Epiphone Les Paul standard out of the box the first thing i obviously noticed was the apperance of the guitar. I must commend the Epiphone company because itnulls flamed cherry sunburst top was much more beautiful than i had expected from a guitar in that price range ($550).

  Playability

I first played it acoustically with no amp. The feel of the neck was wonderful, not to thin or thick, yet I did not like the fact that acces to the upper frets was not as easy as it appeared from the shown cut away. Due to the set neck I was forced to hold the joint with my palm in order to access easy payability to the 18+ frets. On the other hand these frets are seldomly used and the first les paul model was manufactured in 1959 thus it was quite simple ulike some newer guitars today.

  Quality

When plugged into my line 6 amp it sounded above average. I will not lie and say it was the best because quite honostly it doesnnullt even compare to the Alcino V magents in the pro burstbuckers offered on Gibson Les Pauls. Beside from the the actual quality of sound the tone and type of sound offered was superb. With the three way selector and the four volume and tone knobs I was able to find endless tones on only my clean channel. From a bluesy tone with the neck pickup and low tone to a shimmering bride pick up/high tone combonation I was completely satcidfied. The type of sound I acheived was just what i expected: a full warm "round" sounding note full of sustain that made the les paul famous. Unlike Stratocasters it was not bright and/or twangy in the least. When playing it standing up I was concered about the weight of the guitar. The honost truth is unlike some may say it does not affect much at all unless your planning to play hours on end standing up. Even if you want to you will be able to just look at Jimmy Page playing his for three hours straight at the Knebworth concert in 1979.

  Durability

stays in tune for about 3 days full of playing and has never needed adjusting of any kind

  Overall

Any way I would overall give this guitar an 8. Not supurb but a wonderful way to get as close to a Gibson as you can without losing 2 grand.
