Review Epiphone G-310

Review by a visitor on 12.7.2008

I bought this guitar on eBay after playing it at a guitar store, I paid $175.00, I wanted to buy it after trying out a Gibson SG Special; it was way out of my price range so I bought the G-310 which is the more affordable version of the Gibson SG Special with a few tweaks on the features. It is a great guitar for a beginner.

  Features

2 Open Coil Humbucker Pick-Ups: These are cheaper pickups from the original Gibson SG Special but still provide a pretty good tone.

Hardware/ Controls: Chrome, tuning pegs could be replaced though; cheap. 3-way pick up selector with 2 volume & 2 tone knobs. The output is located on the front of the body therefore L-shaped chord is recommended.

Nut Witdth: 1.68" = low action.

Neck/ Fretboard: Bolt-On construction & a mohagany neck with a rosewood, dot inlay fretboard.

Body Material: Alder; good for a warm/ resonant sound.

Bridge/ Tailpiece: nullTune-O-Maticnull bridge; good sustain & a stopbar tailpice.

Finish(es): Ebony, Red, & Vintage-White.

  Playability

It is are very versatile guitar tone wise and you can achieve most desired results but before you soup up this guitar through a full rack of pedals & a double cabinet Marshall take into consideration that THIS IS A BEGINNER GUITAR. compared to other guitars OF ITS RANGE it definitely performs very well.

  Quality

Sound quality is good, great tone in clean & distortion when set up correctly. Compared to most guitars OF ITS RANGE it does perform better than others. One defect nullnoisenull related is that sometimes it generates high pitched feedback.

  Durability

Reliability wise it is good, but when it comes to adjustments it slips out of tune frequently. When it comes to gigs or live performances I personally give it a thumbs down...

  Overall

My overall opinion on the Epiphone G-310; Excellent BEGINNER guitar; I chose because when I first bought it looked appealing, the neck was comfortable on my hands, it provided a good tone & it satisfied my expectations. Right now I am on the look for a new guitar probably a Fender American Standard Telecaster, but I still love my G-310.

i bought this guitar in a shop in newport, wales for ?160. at first i was looking for a les paul but they were just out of my price range. i was looking at an ibanez gio and almost bought it but then i spotted the epiphone sg 310 behind a load of other guitars and decided i wanted it .

  Features

at first i hated the jack plug sticking right out of the front of the guitar but i bought an L shaped lead and it turned ouy to be better than ever. the strap buttons are very good, some other people will say they are crap but they are good. lots of people say this guitar should have a whammy bar but that woulg just spoil the traditional look of the guitar.

  Playability

the guitar is cery comfortable to play standing or sitting and is very light. it has a very heavy metal tone and is great for rock riffs. i have played this next to an origonal gibson sg and there is no immediate differance appart from the pickups.

  Quality

the soung quality of this guitar is immense. i could play it all day. it sounds brilliant on my crappy fender frontman amp, now that realy is saying something.

  Durability

the tuning keys are rubbish and should be replaced with locking ones. i honestly smacke it off a wall when i fell off my bed and it just put a small chip in the head stock. i was seriously surprised the thing didnt break in half. seriously strong guitar!!!

  Overall

when i forst saw this guitar i fell in love and there were no second thoughts when buying it. i have absolutly no regrets and would strongly reccomend this guitar. this is a lot better than my previous guitar (fender squire) and would be a great addition. the only thing i would get after this guitar is a real gigson sg or les paul.

I bought in Groningen in The Netherlands, in a store called Tonika, somewhere in may 2006. I paid ?240,- for it, wich I thought was pretty cheap for an Epiphone.
When I played on an old fake Stratocaster, I thought it was time for a new guitar, because that strat didnnullt play very fine and the sound wasnnullt that good either; but the new guitar had to be under the ?300,-.
First I was looking for some second hand guitars, but I didnnullt trust it. So began to search for a good, reliable guitar, that wasnnullt too expensive for me.
I could buy an Ibanez, Ibanez has some cheap guitars too, and Inullve heard people say that they were playing fine.
But the Ibaneznull I found didnnullt have the looks where I was searching for.
The Epiphones were also quite cheap, I started searching for epinulls on the Internet. I found a good looking red SG(?260,-) in an store, and Inullve played on such a guitar so I new that the neck was very fast playable. But it had no plate on the body, and I was afraid that I would damage the coating.

Finally I found a store that sold an Epiphone SG-310, in Ebony, with plate, and two humbuckers; for only ?240,-
After I read some Epi G-310 reviews, I knew this was the guitar I had to buy.

  Features

There are two open humbuckers, two volume controls and two tone controls. And ofcourse a switch with a treble, a middle, and a rythm option.
The neck has 22 frets, with position marks. And the body is covered with a plate, so playing rough should not be a problem.
The jack output is on the front of the body and not on the side, and the jack plug is going in it rectangular, wich is an advantage when playing on a chair or on the couch because the jack-plug isnnullt in the way.
The two humbuckers and all the controls are just enough. I am missing nothing on this guitar except maybe a vibrato.

  Playability

The neck of the guitar is very fast playable, wich is perfect for lead-guitar, and the fast riffs. But also going from chord to chord is going very flexible. This guitar is just what I need.

  Quality

The bridge pick-up gives with enough distortion an awesome sound, a little shrill, but thatnulls just fine for rock/metal solonulls. The sound of the neck pick-up is less great, but pretty heavy with distortion, and nice calm when you play it clean. But again the bridge pick-up gives much nicer sound. But maybe thatnulls just a matter of taste.
This Epi causes a minimum of rustling, when using the right cable. Feedback shows up very fast.

  Durability

This guitar is pretty much reliable, itnulls a perfect beginners guitar and also a very good one for the experienced guitar players.
But itnulls a pity that after a month playing, the neck pick-up began to fail sometimes. On every moment the sound can just turn off and then suddenly turn on again. That just shouldnnullt happen with a ?240,- guitar. But fine itnulls just a little thing because a use the bridge pick-up most of the time.
But things like a not working neck pick-up, are not wanted when playing a gig. I think itnulls just one guitar that has this problem, so donnullt let this influence your plans of buying it. Inullm just the lucky one that gets the guitar with the problem. I give the durabillity an Average because of that bad working neck pick-up.

  Overall

A good guitar, especially for ?240,-. I can recomend this guitar for those how play Rock/Hard-rock/Heavy Metal, because it performs this kind of music the best. But genres like blues, (jazz), funk sound good aswell on this guitar.
And I must say again that the bridge pick-up with distortion is great.

Ahhh.... my old freind! I didnnullt buy this great little thing from a official Epiphone guitar dealer. No, I got it used, which is good, as itnulls the only one Inullve seen in the great retro white color. Most I see are in that annoyingly generic red wood natural finish. I doubt I would have been able to find it anywhere else. I paid 150 for it, or maybe 175. And, yes, I will say it is excellent!

  Features

It your basic Gibson set up, two humbuckers, two tone and volume switchs and a toggle switch. The pick up where a little rusty and cut out alot at fist, but with a little adjustment and some playing they worked fine. The factory standard pickups have worked fine. I see no reason to replace them.

  Playability

I cannullt really give a fair abd objective observation of how well it plays, as itnulls my guitar and I how been playing it for a long time, Inullm too used to it. In otherwords, I cannullt really say how much other people would like it. However, I can tell you, I can a meatier, thicker and all around better tone from it the I can from my Squier Affinity Strat.

  Quality

The pick ups can be a bit uppity, but it plays fine. Not too much feedback, just enought to be used for effect occasionally, not enought to effect playing at all.

  Durability

Wow, it is durable! The thing was already dented up when I got it, so I donnullt worry about being a little rought with it. You know, throwing it around, hitting into things with it, all that standard stuff. I once threw it across the room for a Drama class presentation, and it still played fine. And younulld think that would mess up the pickups, wouldnnullt you?

  Overall

I enjoy thids guitar immensly. Itnulls fun durable, not too big, not too small, good price. Even thought itnulls used itnulls a great guitar. Besides, used instruments have alot of Soul to them!
