Review Dr. Z Maz 38 Sr. 1x12 combo

Review by a visitor on 11.2.2004

Bought at Charleys Guitars in Dallas, TX
Price:1699.00 note: Dr.z amp prices are set and listed on his web site, any dealer that undercuts price looses their dealership rights!

  Features

This is an all tube 38 watt amp, it is not a clone of any vintage amps. Dr Z does all original circuit designs.
Strong point: 1) The most luscious class A tone (and tons of it) you have heard.
2) Superb construction.
3) One of the smoothest reverbs you have heard.
4) Controls: Vol, Treble, Mid, Bass, Reverb, CUT (this is truly unique, after you dial in the tone you like (there are no bad sounds out of this amp) this lets you fine tune sound) and a master volume. NOTE: NO MATTER HOW YOU TAKE THIS REVIEW THE ONLY WAY TO JUDGE IS TO HEAR FOR YOURSELF!!!
If there is a weak point with Dr. Z is trying to decide which model you want, they are that good.

NOTE: THE WAY I RATE FEATURES IS HOW WELL THE FEATURES ON ANY GIVEN AMP DO THERE JOB, NOT BY THE NUMBER OF KNOBS.... This amp or any Z amp for that matter gets an Excellent rating.

  Playability

Yournulle kidding right? The only amps that are in this league cost at least twice as much or more! And Inullm not kidding. (think Matchle$$)
This amp will give you a tonal orgasm, I havennullt any giutar sound bad thru a Dr.z. If you are a sloppy player keep looking. If yournulle looking for ginding metal distorion, keep looking!

  Quality

This amp truly lets the tone of whatever guitar playing shine thru, even my D35 sounds good thru it. First off I donnullt use effects, but from what I have heard Dr. Z amps were designed to give you the best tone possible and you need some thing extra plug it in. Dead quiet. well you can switch the fan (tube saver) off for recording purposes.

  Durability

If it werennullt a reliable brand I wouldnnullt own it. Any body who owns a Z will attest to that. Does it need frequent adjust? No, even if you bump the knobs you might just find a better tone, once again there are no bad sounds out of this or any Dr. Z product. If you are a blues, country, jazz or rock player you will be absolutely amazed at the Tone. Getting back to reliability, Dr. Z amps come with a lifetime garrantee to the original owner, even people that have bought them used will get same day response on e-mails from the doctor himself.

  Overall

The first time I heard a Dr.Z my mouth hit the floor, it must have been about ten years ago I was in a night club in Dallas listening to a band and the guitarist the best tone I have ever heard and I saw his amp with a Z on the front for two years I asked around to see if anybody had ever heard one of those amps with a Z on it, nobody had, well Ikinda lost track of it, years later searching for a BFDR I stumbled on the Znulls again and now Inullm in tonal heaven. I choose the Maz 38 Sr. because it can cover a lot of bases. Am I considering a better one. With Dr. Z there is not better there is different!
