Review Dean Hardtail standard

Review by a visitor on 26.8.2008

I bought this guitar through the Belfast Guitar Emporium, for around ?400 GBP. I paid extra because they only had a Fluorescent Orange model and so I request they order in a new one for me. I got the Black finish.

  Features

The Select model comes with the Hardtop and the Tremolo, and so if you have the money its worth the extra. I didnnullt really have it to spend. So I bought the standard. The factory set Pickupnulls are good quality. For a local artist they should be sufficient. The difference between the pick-up sounds is also sufficient. The coil-taps are an extra nice touch. It can add even more variety to your sound. However the draw backs are that you wonnullt be able to get extremes of both.

The neck is fat, and a big step up from the Strat neck I was use to playing.

  Playability

As previously stated the Neck is fat, allowing for a more heavy style of playing, and so may be an adjustment for Strat players, but overall playability is good.

  Quality

The quality of sound is good. The noise levels are usually unnoticeable, as opposed to the previous guitars Inullve had, saying that they were poor models.

  Durability

This guitar is very durable. I used it on all my gignulls. It has grover tuning, and doesnnullt require tuning tweaks after every song, but saying that it cannullt be guaranteed for every Hard tail I guess. It has taken a number of knocks and Bumps and is still in great condition. A back up guitar gig at gigs is advised regardless of what guitar you have, but I never required one.

  Overall

I donnullt like Dean guitars. They are designed for Thrash metal, such as Trivium, Pantera and Slipknot. Members from all three bands endorse them. However this guitar is designed with as much in mind as possible. I play mostly Rock N Roll, (Elvis, Chuck Berry) and Blues (BB King). It suited the sound perfectly.

My band played Mostly Metal (Iron Maiden, Sabbath, Metallica). The sound was suited perfectly.

The sound was better from Select model, but the Hard Tail is a fantastic guitar for the Price it costs, especially these days.

I bought this guitar for $530 from petercooks.

  Features

there isnt alot of difference in sound when you switch pickups(2 humbuckers) but there is a big difference with sensitivity as the lead/bridge pickup is very high up even though there is no noise. The guitar features grover tuners aswell wich are very nice.

  Playability

the playabilty is very good although the frets are a little sharp. The action is very low.

  Quality

the sound is very warm and you need to keep that in mind if your going to buy this guitar.Even though the guitar sounds very warm it isnt to dull wich makes it ideal for chorus/flange type effects.

  Durability

the tuners are very strong and dont need tuning too often. The black finish i got scratches easily so I strongly advise a case for it.

  Overall

Overall the guitar is an exelent instrument if your playing clean or distorted.I chose this one because it is a super-strat so it could use the same case as my strat and i needed a guitar with humbuckers so i tried it out at the shop.

Remember the guitar is very warm sounding.
