Review Dean Edge

Review by a visitor on 8.5.2007

Bought my Dean Edge-1 used (in perfect condition) at Music Go-Round for $149 with its hardcase. I was looking for an inexpensive passive bass as my next step. This bass is beautiful: deep red with lots of grain. Light and very, very comfortable..The most comfortable bass I own (I now have 4, and I will not part with this Dean).

  Features

Basswood body, Rosewood fingerboard. Long scale 34" Maple neck. EMG Soapbar pickups. Twin volume pots and one tone control pot. Sealed die-cast tuners. The output jack wasnnullt great (didnnullt seat very well, and would crackle a bit if the cord was moved), but that was a $5 change out.

  Playability

I switch between basses quite often, and this is the easiest of them all to play. The neck is perfect, and the soapbars make two outstanding thumb-rests (along with quality sound). Itnulls light and extremely comfortable. It just fits me quite well, and is a joy to play. OK, itnulls not a Warwick Thumb or a Zon, but itnulls the best value for your buck out there. I consider myself a beginner/novice bass player, but I know how good basses sound and feel. This Dean Edge-1 will surprise anyone looking for an inexpensive entry-level bass whose playability far outweighs the price. This bass doesnnullt have the tonal range or punch of my G&L, but itnulls not supposed to.

  Quality

A bit noisy output jack and pots. $5 fix (for another output jack) and some pots cleaner and all the static is gone.
I really like this bass, and it is actually easier to play than my fretless. The neck is so smooth and fast - itnulls hard to put down. The sound quality is more than adequate for my playing ability, and chances are itnulls good enough for you, too (read: younullre probably not as good as you think you are).

  Durability

Doesnnullt go out of tune at all. I donnullt play in a band, so I donnullt know how well it would hold up to constant transport and rough handling/abuse. It feels solid and reliable.

  Overall

I gave this bass an excellent rating not in comparison to other basses, but for its return on your investment. For less than $200 you can get a real quality bass that wonnullt skimp on sound or build quality like some other entry level basses. Knowing what I know of this Dean Edge-1, I would pay $400 for one if that were the going price. A lot of people rave about the SX basses and their low cost-to-quality sound ratio. I own both, and the Dean is a better deal.

I got this bass about a year ago now. i paid about ?230 for it but it was originally ?270(i got a discount cos i know the guy at the shop a bit), i got it form the music place in letchowrth, hertfordshire

  Features

It has two soap bar pickups which can give a lovely warm bass sound or a morew toned jazz sound. It has two tone controls and a volume so its fairly versatile in the tone depratment. its got a nice look which is suitable for metal or punk (as is the sound),(very nice, unique headstock), it has 24 frets and its neck is truly gorgeuos, very thin. The pickups are fairly unique and give it a great lool

  Playability

Because of the thin neck it makes for a very nice play. it feels very comfortable and the neck is one thing that made me by it straight away. Its 24 frets means there are no limits on your playing.

  Quality

its sound is good, not as good as more expensive basses and its lack of jazz pickup means its treble isnnullt too good. But it feels like quality to hold etc and therenulls no buzz from the pickups

  Durability

in all its very durable if your not careless with it. the strings are very durable. However one of the strap pegs has come loose. It doesnnullt scratch too easily but looks poor if you dont clean off the fingerprints etc regularly.

Im pretty pleased with this bass. its quality is exsquisite for the price. but sound wise i feel ishould maybe have gone for the ibanez sound gear at a similar price.
