I bought my Dean Evo XM at my local Guitar Center. The cost was $119. The neck is so good and the style is for punk in my opinion. I am a punker so I bought it and Inullll kep it my whole life like Willie Nelson! I bought it half a year ago so this is and accurate review.

  Features

This item is a great guitar. I am a guitar freak and I chose this guitar over the Strat and many more. It has a smooth thin neck that is great for shredders. You have complete control of all the frets. No whammy bar on this guitar and no place to put one. The only thing wrong with it is that I have a hard time cleaning under the strings. Alot of dust gets under there (Not that it hurts the wood or anything). The strings are low to the frets for easy shredding.

  Playability

This guitar reminds me of most Ibanez guitars and it has a Strat-like neck.

  Quality

The humbuckers are a little quiet but that is al about the amps right? Great sound if you ask me

  Durability

The guitar is great overall. I dropped it many times dented it and everything. It only haves 2 big scratches and scratches add character. I love the strength of this great Dean! Great for gigs never once had a problem with the guitar except for minor humbucker troubles!

  Overall

It can last my lifetime like Willie Nelsonnulls guitar "Trigger". If you get a Dean Evo XM then prepare for a long time friend!

the dean evo xm is an imense guitar its lioke a les paul but different its singlecut is sloped unlike the les paul it has a wood varnished outside its quite heavy but it has a nice feel the fretboard is thin which is good for playing bar chords it only has two volume and tone dials but then i dont see why you need 4 on the les paul it is hevier but a overall better guitar.it cost about ?170.00 but it was with a package wich was exellent this was from clevedon music the have a website www.clevedonmusic.co.uk. the thing that made me buy it was the fact it was not a copy lke the alternative les paul by epiphone and it had a smaller fret board.

  Features

it was exellent technicaly though it only has 2 controls and a switch but why do you need 4 ,they just get in the way. they are well placed the neck is bolt on and the leadis on the sde where i like it so it doesnt get in the way.

  Playability

  Playability

it has a excellent smooth neck. The neck is very nice....the guitar is nice and small...well medium.... very very very good!!!!!!!!11

  Quality

it performs better than most guitars especcially the gibson sg!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11

  Durability

Does not damage easily at anyway neccessary...it would take a flamethrower to 100% completely destroy the rock solid wood...

CAN LAST FOREVER!!!

Bought 2nd hand off eBay in the UK for GBP 60. I was looking for a doner guitar for a project but eventually decided to keep it untouched.

  Features

Its basic; two humbies, one tone and one volume pot and a three-way switch. The tuners are standard non-locking sealed units. Strongest point is the bridge which I found to be pretty good for the price range. The Body is veneered Basswood so pretty light weight which can be a plus for some.

Unlike an earlier reviewer I didnnullt have a problem with the frets - maybe I was just lucky and got a goodnullun. Whilst on the subject the frets are Jumbos which IMO are ideal for beginners.

  Playability

After changing the strings, adjusting the truss and lowering the action I was surprised by the playability. I wish I had this little guitar when I first started to learn as its well balanced and a joy to play. I still regularly practise scales and prefer to use this guitar as its by far the most comfortable I have.

  Quality

Tone was not the greatest, mostly compressed into the mids with little treble and a dissapointing bottom end and the 3 position switch hardly made a difference. I eventually changed the bridge humbie for a Korean OEM and fitted a coil tap. Now it has plenty of grunt but can also sound sweet with the tap. The neck pickup sounds feeble in comparison.

  Durability

Stays in tune and is reliable. The Mahogany veneer is very thin and marks easily, but that just adds character doesnnullt it? To be honest this is one of its weak points as any dings reveal the Basswood which is a different colour. I have used this guitar as a back-up for gigs and it is beginning to look very battered and not in a nice way.

  Overall

This is a low budget starter guitar not the ultimate rock machine, but once set up correctly itnulls well behaved and easier to come to terms with than say a Strat copy. Donnullt waste your money changing the pups, by the time you realise the tone is feeble you should be ready to sell it and move on.

I bought it second hand, ?40, about 1 week ago.
I bought it cos it was cheap, looked good, and i was looking to start on 6 string, as ive been learning bass for a while.

  Features

It doesnnullt really have very many features, 2 humbuckers, 1x volume 1x tone control, switch.
Thats about it.But the features it DOES have, are of a generally good quality, and the guitar does sound great.
The thin neck is great aswell, for my small hands.

  Playability

The playability of this guitar is incredible!
Its really easy to play across the neck, and its definatly better to play than my friends ibanez prestige! Also better than most of the modern epiphones which i WAS going to buy.
Good for the biginner too, it seems.
Definatly worth buying for the playability alone, definatly outdoes its price.

  Quality

The sound qaulity of this guitar is good.
With only standard humbuckers, it aint gonna be incredible.
But its definatly good for the price range.

  Durability

Well, i christened mine by smashing a bottle over the body, and it survived merely with a little chip. The itonation seems to be in good condition, and the tuning stays ok with the right strings. Seems good enough for live gigs, have heard that the jack socket is fairly unreliable though.

  Overall

This guitar is DEFINATLY worth buying.
It looks and sounds good, amazing to play.
Generally an all round good guitar!
After learning to play for a bit, i will probably go and buy a danelectro or something instead.
But inulld be suprised if it lived up to this!

I went to Guitar Center to look for an inexpensive guitar for my son. He has been playing my Vintage null57 reissue and I felt it better if he got his own. Saw the ad that they were selling the EVO XM for 90 bucks and thought I would give it a try. I was blown away by the appearance and seemingly quality workmanship in this incredibly cheap guitar. Far and away better than any of the Epiphone offerings. Better action by far and the intomnation was spot on. I brought a tuner to check it out.
I bought one for myself because I just could not believe it was less than 100 bucks!

  Features

Weakest link are the tuners, although they have not failed me yet, and the pickups while working perfectly are not inspiring. I am contemplating putting a Seymore Duncan JB in the bridge. Funny is that the JB is almost as expensive as the whole guitar.
Fret work is sharp around the edges but they intonate well all over the neck. No buzz anywhere. The neck is very thin which is not my favorite shape but still it is comfortable. Very flat radius, 15" I think. Easy to bend with the super thin strings they put on there. Inullll up them to 9nulls and most likely get a better tone.

Basswood body with a Mahogany veneer for looks.

  Playability

Plays fantastic! Only area that could be improved on is the somewhat sharp edges to the frets but hey.... I have seem worse on guitars costimg twice or more.

  Quality

Sounds way better than you would expect a $100 guitar to sound. nullbuckers are quiet albeit nothing to write home about. They are servicable if not inspiring.
Overall the build quality on this blows me away considering the price.

  Durability

Have not had it long but it seems solid as a rock. I have been playing for over 40 years and I can tell what will not not stand up to wear and tear. Tuners might need replacing eventually.

  Overall

You cannot buy a better guitar at this price. Inullve just about tried them all and this guitar blows nullem away. I truly believe you would have to spend at least 300 bucks to get something else of similar quality.

I bought this from musicians friend online for $100. incl shipping.
read a lot of great reviews so I thought I would try it.

  Features

it has average cheap guitar features, too bad it doesnnullt work

  Playability

cannot be set up properly

  Quality

Absolute JUNK. I guess thatnulls what you get for $100.

Full of defects. Poor lumpy and cracked finish. Lumps on back of kneck. Output jack loose.
Cannot be setup as the TRUSS rod was stripped from the factory. Action is too high. Cannot be intonated properly as the BRIDGE is mounted too far forward. BRIDGE screws are loose. Some frets buzz like crazy even though the action is high. Bridge pickup is loud, crakles and is tinny sounded. Neck pick-up is weak and dull sounding.

This is truly an AWFUL gutar and will be sent back to musicians friend

  Durability

not playable as received and donnullt think it is going to last at all.

  Overall

save you money and buy something better. A fender affinity series squire for example is easily twice the quality of this clunker. Guess I got what i paid for.

I bought it from musicians friend, $100 (after shipping and everything). I had been looking around for a replacement electric for my cheapo kramer, but I didnnullt want to spend much. I read some reviews for the Dean Evo XM, and they were amazing, some people even said that it played as well as a gibson sg reissue. I decided to buy it, and it was pretty amazing, I never even had to have it set up.

  Features

Itnulls a very minimalistic guitar, one volume, one tone, and I pretty much only use the bridge pickup, but the neck one isnnullt bad. the intonation was set almost perfectly when I got it, and Inullve never had it set up. Three on a side tuners, dean stock H/H config, 3-way pickup selector. It really wasnnullt bad, even the strings were decent. The tuners are DEFINATELY the worst part, but Inullve since fixed them up a little. Average features, becaues there arennullt really that many.

  Playability

I love this guitar, for christmas Inullm getting new pups, and a full set up for it, and I cannullt wait to see what it does then. It really does play like a gibson SG reissue, according to both me and my old teacher, who would know. It doesnnullt sound as good as an SG, it just plays as well, which means itnulls fun and easy to move around on the neck, and the notes sound decent, the frets are good. the selector switch works fine, but I personally tend to favor the bridge pickup, so the neck one really doesnnullt get a lot of use.

  Quality

The quality is amazing, one interesting thing is that the type of finish they used makes the guitar very sticker-abled, so you can easily remove any stickers that you donnullt like anymore. This guitar was $100, and with some new pickups and tuners, it would be like playing a gibson SG reissue. Inullm not putting a lot of stock in SGnulls, so even if you donnullt like them, put some other kind of work into it, make it play like a LP, or a schecter, i dontnull care. The quality is amazing, especially for the price. dean really did some good work here

  Durability

The tuners were kinda not so good, but not horrible. Not realizing how much I liked it, I havennullt taken the best care of it, so the fretboard is a little dirty now. One time the strap on my gig bag broke and the guitar hit the ground sideways, so the bolt on neck sort of pushed to one side. Dontnull get me wrong, Inullm not saying the neck bent, Inullm saying where it bolts to the guitar, it went sideways. I loosened the bolts, reset it, and it works fine again. I also took the casing off the tuners and tightened their screws, and theynullre much better now. Itnulls mad of basswood, so itnulls not the guitar you wanna be beating up, but it is INCREDIBLY light, and I LOVE playing it. I installed homemade straplocks, so itnulls safe from any falls now. Donnullt let other people fool you, basswood is a good thing to build a guitar from, if itnulls a light guitar. It does have some dings, but thatnulls slightly in due to my carelessness on several occasions.

  Overall

For the price, this is an AMAZING guitar, do not think twice about getting it, there is not better beginner guitar for the price, and Inullm not a beginner anymore and itnulls still my favorite guitar. Pronulls who want a cheap guitar to work on, make a project out of, buy this baby and have fun. Itnulls worth the risk for $100 bucks. I recently bought an oscar schmidt delta king semi-hollow, by washburn. That thing is a high quality guitar, listed at $350, and the sound quality is SUPERB, inullm making no modifications to it, it is the NICEST guitar Inullve ever played, in terms of sound and fluidity, but even with all that quality, I still like my dean better, and I cannullt wait for it to be set up with new pickups. I kinda regret getting the oscar shmidt, i wish Inulld just bought some new tuners and high class pickups, but oh well, it will make a good performance guitar. The dean is probably best suited for performances, because itnulls so like, and the neck is so fast. I love it, donnullt think twice, just get it.

I bough this guitar used from Sam Ash for $70. It was in beautiful condition and I loved it straight away. I was drawn completely by the appearance and was delighted with its light weight and how well it felt in my (relatively) small hands. I have no trouble playing up and down the neck, and across it.

  Features

It seems basic, but compares very well (ie better) than our other basic guitar, the Epiphone Les Paul SPecial copy. THe EVO sounds better with a much better range in the tone and feels better, being lighter.

  Playability

Other than the above - it is great -seems to hold itnulls tune well (the tuners are a little inconsistent tho). MY son, who plays a LOT, loves it and has tried to sneak it off a couple of times........

  Quality

very quiet pickups, great tone and volume range....

  Durability

I cannullt really assess this since I only got it a week ago. However there are a couple of things that I think will need to be dealt with by a professional before Inulld rate it as "terriffic". There is a high spot on the fretboard at fret 7 -it may just be that fret. However, I had to rais the bridge a long way to clear it and consequently cannullt properly nullintonenull the strings - the "G" is particularly bad for some reason and this is a concern. However, since I only play for fun, it isnnullt a major one. I did note another review that mentioned the same thing. Hopefully itnullll be cleared up when the neck/fret problem is solved.

  Overall

Inulld buy another and Inulld recommend it to anyone as a solid, reliable instrument (with the caveat on the neck/intonation above)

Ok, I donnullt know the year but I purchased it new and itnulls still on the Dean website so itnulls gotta be recent. Paid $99 at Zzounds. Itnulls made in China.

  Features

Itnulls got 22 frets, volume and tone control with a 3-way switch for going between the 2 Dean stock humbuckers. Itnulls a basswood body with a mahogany finish. Really beautiful looking. The neck is maple with a rosewood fingerboard. Itnulls an LP body style, fatter on the bottom. Hard tail bridge. Stock tuners. The neck is thin and unbelievably playable. Everything works fine. Initially, I felt it had some string/tuner slippage but I changed to my GHS strings and the tuners hold just as well as my other guitars. Itnulls not top end stuff but it all works.
Action and intonation was great right out of the box. If it werennullt, I do my own set-ups anyway. But the action was great, close but with room for feeling. The guitar looks good to me. Inullve oohed and aahed over beautiful guitars. This is not a work of art but the fit all feels right in my hands. I have a hard time putting it down.

  Playability

It has withstood my playing. I would probably replace it if something happened to it. Therenulls no doubt in my mind that I could not have gotten a better guitar for the price. It all feels solid. But it also feels alive. Inullm not just playing it. Inullm playing with it. I never play out without backup... thatnulls just not sane!

  Quality

Not top of the line but way way more than the price I paid!

  Durability

I go through a Behringer 212. I can run it through an acoustic sim and do some heavy strumming. I switch mid song to heavy brit style distortion and rock on it. The humbuckers are powerful and quiet. It is very versatile. I can get just under a tele spank with the bridge pickup. The blend between both pickups is really nice. I usually go full treble on the tone pot, then dial back slowly about 1/4 to a sweet full sound. It sounds great clean. Sounds great distorted. We have an instrumental where I trade solos with the other guitarist and I go between a clean phased sound to distorted and this baby really sounds good doing it. Yep, I use it to play out. I can dial up a really bluesy sound with bite on it as well. It sustains much better than I thought it would. I also do some crying Santana guitar soloing and, again, the guitar is not shy and is very capable.

  Overall

This is a terrific guitar. I have actually fallen in love with it. So, Inullm cheap and easy! Itnulls versatile. Allows me to play any style. Easy to play. Inullve been playing for 35 years. Inullve gone through LPnulls, Strats and Telenulls. My overall favorite tonal guitar is a Peavey Reactor Axe which out Telenulls any Tele Inullve heard or played. But even itnulls not as versatile as the Evo. I also own an OnullHagan Nightwatch. (you should check around for these. They are amazing to play and hear. You can usually find them cheap on E-Bay but they are handmade and were made in the US. As beautiful as fine furniture with an incredible LP sound.) My grunt guitar used to be a Yamaha Pacifica. I like the Pacifica but the Evo blows it away. I keep it around for occasional whammy bar action.
Inullve heard the hooha over the body wood. Let me weigh in. For $99, it couldnnullt be mahogany. Had to either be a mistake or misrepresentation. Was it intentional? Who knows. Maybe some marketing guy misread his copy. I find it hard to believe that Dean would risk reputation over a low end guitar with so little a rate of return. I didnnullt lose a lung over it. I wasnnullt in the market for a McCarthy PRS! Worst case, they give me my $99 and $10 for suffering and I have to go buy a Squier Bullet. (Donnullt make me do that. Theynullre horrible. I couldnnullt get past what they sound like because the action and setup was bad on all 5 of the ones I picked up at Guitar Center.) And regardless of what itnulls made from, it sounds terrific. I got my moneynulls worth and then some.

I picked up this mohogany natural beauty for under $100.00($189.00 list) brand new.

  Features

First off, this guitar is extremely lightweight. The reddish natural mohogany body is good looking. The entire back of the neck is done in natural hard maple. The rest of the guitar and hardware is black. Dual humbuker pick ups, 3 postion switch, and single volume and tone controls ( metal). Sealed tuners hold their position well. The EVO line has an angled stock, meaning there is a angle where it meets the neck providing fantastic access to the higher notes. There is no pick guard or whammy bar.

  Playability

It is a great guitar for those who mess around with an axe. Its light, good looking and plays well. I have played many guitars in my younger years, I owned a Hondo II Les Paul copy and a very expensive Westone, this overall is better that either.

  Quality

The tones are rich, this guitar generates no backround noise, and the factory setup was spot on. It has a great crunch to it and the neck is fast and easy to play. A small handed person would love it.

  Durability

This axe holds it tune, and it will not hurt your shoulder, it is light in weight. I cannot speak of playing live, but I wouldnnullt hesitate to do so.

  Overall

Overall this EVO XM cannot be beat for the price, I looked for a month! It quality IS outstanding at this price. After a 15 year layoff, I looked hard for a quality guitar at a good price. I tried them all, Jackson (nice) B.C. Rich, Ibanez, Epiphone, Fender , Squire, .... I chose the Dean EVO XM. $99.00
