Review Boss DS-2 Turbo Distortion

Review by Endless on 28.6.2006

I bought the Boss DS-2 because I was really into Nirvana and Red Hot Chili Peppers and I knew John Frusciante and Kurt Cobain used them too. I friend sold me the Boss DS-2 because it was his backup, but he never used it so he sold it. He sold it on ebay for 70$ but I paid him only 50$

  Features

I really like the pedal and my settings are:

LEVEL: All the way up (but when I combinate it with my DOD fx69b Grunge 9 nullo clock)
TONE: Mostly at 11 nullo clock
Distortion: All the way up! :)
TURBO: I prefer mode 1

I actually really donnullt like the Turbo button, so I ALWAYS use mode 1. Because the Turbo (mode 2) sounds too treble.

  Playability

The thing I actually hate about the Boss DS-2 is that you have to play hard to hear the sound loud and clear.

Something else I actually donnullt like is that it sounds kinda weird, there is no gain on it and I actually donnullt like that so I mostly combinate it with a boost to have a little bit more gain. But I donnullt like this so hard because I use a boost on the Boss DS-1 too.

  Quality

Mostly I combinate the Boss DS-2 with my DOD fx69b Grunge for the real heavy songs. The sound of the Boss DS-2 is really cool when you use it on a tube amp.

It sounds really GRUNGE.

When you combinate it with a boost it sounds a kind of like the Bleach-album (Nirvananulls first album appeared in 1989)

  Durability

When you turn up your tube amp it sounds really good, and really grungy.

I really like the Boss DS-2, but I actually I like the Boss DS-1 better, the sound is more pure. (Only the Japanese version)

I bought this pedal for $140 AUD at a Allannulls Music sale... (they normally sell them for 240)

  Features

Pedal came with no instructions but was really easy to figure out... the turbo function is pretty much useless. The Pedal needs a bit more control over the sound rather than just tone maybe contour or something but you can get other Boss pedal that have this. Can be hooked up to a footswitch to switch the turbo on/off but like i said, younulld never use it anyway.

  Playability

I was looking for a distortion pedal that would cover punk/rock and some leads for metal and this covers all of it pretty well. It lacks a bit for the really heavy stuff though.

  Quality

Sound qulatiy is great. The pedal has some sort of turbo circuit in it that eliminates hum or something. However the distortion of this pedal at any less than 50% sounds bad, more of a heavy fuzz than turbo distortion.

  Durability

Itnulls a boss... Built like a brick. you could throw it off a building an itnullll still work

This pedal was everthing i wanted and would use it for a gig anytime. Itnulls totally reliable and really easy to use. Distortion is a bit limited but this pedal will cover most distortion that younullll want to play.

First off, the only reason I was looking for a distortion pedal in the first place was because I bought a "fender deville" amp and wanted more distortion because this amp is known for its clean sound anyway not its overdrive. I looked on the internet for good pedals out there to buy and found out that there are too many out there that inullll never own because they cost alot! Tube pedals sound nice but I dont have the money for it now having just bought a "tube" amp. Anyway I went to my local guitar shop to buy a boss ds-2 pedal(one of the pedals I found on the internet) for a little under $90 and lucky me I found the same orange pedal in a pawn shop next door for $30 bones and I traded my old weak status pedal (ibanez ds7) and only ended up paying $25!

  Features

The Boss ds-2 pedal has 4 knobs and is very simple to figure out which is a very good thing cause somtimes too many options can be a pain in the ass. Basically, I turn everything almost to its highest setting to get the sound I wanted except for the sound level and BAM! there it is...

  Playability

I wouldnnullt say its the exact "crunchy" sound I was looking for but it makes my old pedalnulls distortion sound like a fart in the wind.

  Quality

The sound is very nice though once you test it out in songs that use distortion in it and itnulls all you really need for playing todaynulls type of music.

  Durability

The Boss pedals are all fragile and break like glass slippers on a fat girlnulls feet. JUST KIDDING! These things are solid and made for stompin on and ive never had a problem with one from the past ones ive owned, so unless your really into your heavy hardcore music one day and take a sledgehammer to it this things not going to break!

  Overall

I found no problem with it and it sounds especially nice through my new amp. From the clean sound to this pedalnulls distortion inspires new songs and new riffs to tweak and geak with, cause thats what your supposed to do, is tweak with strings NOT knobs and buttons and this pedal allows that. There are other pedals out there that sound nice but as far as price and availability this pedal is almost a "default" for distortion pedals.
